Employment using 3D CAD

On my hunt for alternative careers, wife suggested I look into what's available using 3D CAD as it's something I do as a part of my hobbies and enjoy.
What I need to know is what sort of jobs are available, what sort of training / quals / vocational quals can be gained / are required etc, what is the range of pay and what the market place is like! At the moment I'm self-taught and not huuuugely proficient but that can obviously be worked on, plus I have 15 odd years history in design so can pick up design packages usually quite rapidly.
You may have guessed this is quite early on into investigations, am planning to google tonight but though there is bound to be a few people involved in the game on here that can either encourage or put a swift end to it!
