Last week I decided the Elise wasn't getting enough use as a weekend toy and decided to advertise it. Today I receive in the post a tax renewal notice and the tax has gone down!!! £145 a year! Cheapest I have paid in a few years. With the renewal for the Jag around £400 I am wondering whether the Elise would make a better daily runner than the sensible car, especially with 40mpg!

Hmmm, going to keep an eye out for a second set of wheels for daily tyres....

How do Elise's rate as daily drivers? Is the chassis protection from all the crap on the roads during winter up to much?
Aluminium chassis and fibreglass body. My TVR days of spending the summers waxoyling and the winters worrying about outriggers are a few years behind me!

I don't like driving it in heavy spray mind. I guess thats just the fact its so low to the ground.

Interesting how I am getting a few offers of p/x from owners of sports cars that are of similar performance(ish) but carry far higher running costs (Griff 500, 350Z etc). Sign of the times?

For the right car people are buying. Have had a good level of interest in mine, and managed to get an agreement to buy pretty quickly all things considered. Best swap I got offered was for an E39 M5. Was sorely tempted, but the other half has a 350Z so a more sensible frugal offering is more likely.

Interesting you were offered a swap as well (esp for a less than frugal uber saloon..). I dont recall your advert inviting offers in p/x either. My advert doesnt (not that I mind) but never previously have I offered a car up for sale for cash and had so many offers in p/x. Its what is making me wonder if the car market is so dead that people are struggling to sell the heavier running costs sports cars and so are trying to do sideways deals.

I am quite pleased no one has offered a swap for an M5 with me. I am not sure I would have your restraint. hubba hubba.

Ditch the Jag and buy sensible winter tyres for the Elise.

this is the same Taff who swapped his sports car for a GT and yet has still kept the Rover walnut warrior for daily useage?

PS - will be emailing Team Bukkake members next week re Xmas night out. Will be different venue this year - probably Brum.

Definitly use the Elise everyday. I use my S1 rain or shine. The only time that its been a problem is for carrying lots of stuff. I am in the fortunate position of having access to a LWB van for emergencies though. There are times when its really chucking it down when I'd prefer to be in another car. I lent the Elise to a friend last weekend to use as a wedding car, he was best man and drove the groom to the church. Unfortunately the wedding was in Morpeth, Northumberland and after dealing with several flooded roads, and a flooded car, I'm sure my mate would have appreciated a different car, but these are exceptional circumstances, 99% of the time I wouldn't want to drive anything else.

I tend not to keep cars much more than a year and I'm coming up to 12 months with this car but am in a position where a) I want to keep it and b) I can't think of anything I want that would come close to the Elise and yet offer similar running costs. I genuinely think, its rapidly becoming a sensible car and I've pretty much decided I might as well keep it indefinitly. I am considering investing in a hard top for winter though.

This sort of talk is making me want an S1. I'd only use it at weekends as well. I guess there are only the three usual concerns:

1. Habitability - Will I be dry and tinnitus-free at the end of a longish road trip?
2. Practicality - Will I fit in it? Will the relative lack of dignified ingress / egress and minimal luggage / passenger space ever get on my tits?
3. Temptation - Will I want more power after about 5 minutes (not foregone but possible)?

I think in a lot of ways an Elise could work as an only car for me - <5k miles annually, no commuting, no kids etc. You can cetrainly make a case on the basis of running costs as well....

/calls bank manager for fifth time this week....

I should also admit that I car share with my girlfriend and normally hop in the passenger seat of her car Mon-Fri so I can have a few beers after work! So really I only drive at weekends. And then when I am sober.
