2005 Focus auxilliary connector

I've had my 2005 Focus Titanium for a few weeks, and only just discovered there is a connector in the glove box which I assume is connected to the stereo. I've tried connecting my ipod with a standard lead (worked in old car, which had an aftermarket stereo), and nothing happens - can't even select AUX mode on the stereo... it's a combined CD/AUX button (standard Ford stereo - I can find out the model if required). Any ideas? Or have I missed something really obvious?
