well ok then chaps im sure im not the first!

But ive been offered an upgrade on my body for Christmas by the family (long way off i know but its a big decission). Currently im runnning a 300D and for the past year and a half has been a proper work horse. Nothing wrong with it apart from signs of old age and ive ground out of its functions.

Ive always used canon IE 35mm and medium format at uni, and digital with the 300D since ive left.

However after going to Jacobs today to have a feel of both Canon and Nikon im even more confused!

Should I say with what I know or would the changed be good?

Options I looked at are

Canon - used 30D cheaper option, new 40D or Used 1DMKII alot more cash

Nikon - Used D200 cheaper option, New D300 or Used D2X alot more cash

I currently on have a 18-55mm kit lense for the 300D so lense mounting isnt a problem as im looking to get a couple of lenses aswell.

So has what are your thoughs?

Cheers PS

A decent lens will make far more a difference to your photography than an of those choices IMO. Budget for a fast std lens (say a Sigma 18-50 F2.8) then decide what body you can afford to put it on. Personally I'd go for a 40D as it's SO cheap right now. D200 a little bit only hat, but cheap also. Don't go for the D300 unless you can also stump up for a lens worthy of it.

If you go the Nikon route I'd take the D300 over the D2x (I have a D2x). D300 is 4 years later, better metering, better low light performance ... and cheaper.

Unless you want to take pictures in the rain and drop the camera from time to time... in which case, choose the D2x - It's a tank.

Thanks for the comments guys, im looking to get the best body i can for under a £1000 as it is a christmas present, i will be buying the lenses myself once I have the body.

VxDuncan - Totally agree with you that the lenses make a difference more than the body itself perhaps, I do have a personnal budget for lenses of which im looking at 24-70 f2.8 and a wideangle prime of around 20mm f2.8 more than likely both sigma (like the feel and in price range).

GetCarter - Thanks for the comments the D2X did feel like a robust little character thats for sure, agreed the D300 is newer and more moden features, but would an ex pro camera give me room to expand my capabilities?

What about the new D90? Not looked too much, but it has live screen and movie recording

they didnt have any stock in Jacobs Leics till the end of the month so going to pop back in when they have some in also the 50D but i think that might be abit too pricey for my budget coming in at £1200 on the tinterwebs.

Does look good but im not sure what the point of the movie mode to be honest.
