Hi

Question for any web developers / development companies.

We have developed a web service for a client which does postcode lookup against Royal Mail PAF data. We're considering making it commercially available and would be interedted in any feedback from anyone that already uses such a service or would be interested in the service. We're looking at charging annually per domain for unlimited lookups. What price would you be willing to pay?

Thanks in advance..

Sounds good.

I can see the use of this in projects I've done at home.

Unlimited lookups for a set annual price is a great idea. Not sure how much you should charge, perhaps see what other web services charge annually for those who do unlimited lookups?

Make it free!! eek

Initially anyway.

Give good support for people developing against it. Maybe even do , or get someone to do, a simple component that can be used in common development languages.

As long as you make sure that its very clear that this is free for 3 months or whatever and then it will be x amount, i don't think you will have any problems.

As for prices, as mentioned before - check out the competition and undercut them.

First off you need to make yourself fully aware of the licencesing costs of what you want to do. You will need to register with the Royal Mail as a Solution provider.

bare in mind that this is also available through a number of other options (AFD postcode etc)

Agreed, I've dealt with this sort of thing before - I think it's GBMail or someone who do it as a standalone license (with update files you subscribe to), PostcodeAnywhere do it for 2p a query (web service) as well (from memory, so could be wrong company and/or amount sorry smile).

You need to be careful with the unlimited offering too I'd have thought, depending on the way you pay for the data in the first place - could be a possible avenue for abuse?

Is there any kind of value add on top you might be able to offer to give you an edge? (just a thought)

We use postcode anywhere for this, so have to be better than that to consider changing.
