Gallardo and Esprit in Australia
Discussion
On September 3rd the folks at the Eastern Creek in Sydney, Australia got a treat when they were allowed to drive one of two Gallardos on the track. If you look at the picture at the bottom of the first page you will see an S4s next to the yellow Gallardo. Does this car belong to one of our fellow list members?

That S4s was sold only about a month or two at the Lotus Dealer in Sydney. 14,000km car. No idea who bought it. There's less than 10 S4s in Australia and that's the only burgundy one. There's a ton of S4 though - they were sold here between '93 and '97.
That red Countach with the red LAMB plates - I saw an article on it not long ago. It has 57,000km on it as it is used as a regular driver! You wouldn't think that they could last that much, considering most of them have less than 10,000km.

I am a Lotus guy and always will be. I saw a Gallardo a few weeks ago and they look much better in person. I would love to test one out!

Does anybody like the looks of the Gallardo? It is a great car in every way but the most important one...looks! The car is literally an everyday exotic, with Audi levels of quality, but who cares when it looks like a Toyota Celica GTS.
I would like to see the car in person. Many cars look better in person. Many people think the S4 looks odd from certain camera angles due to the unusal mid hatch wing . I was one of them till I saw one in person. Many people say the same about white Esprit's but they look very nice in person.

Hello Guys,
i`m working every day on the Gallardo's at my Company.
I must say it's the best Lamborghini ever made. The quality level is at high standard.
But sometimes i'm asking myself :Is this still an Lamborghini?Take a look at the Air condition panel,or at the Radio.Looks like the one on a Audi A3.Where is the italian design gone?
There are many small things which make these kind of cars different to the others.
Maybe we need more time to understand the italian kind of living, feeling.
Here in Germany people are very rational.

I saw the gallardo first at Geneva in March. They had a black and a yellow car on the stand. I was totally blown away by the look. I’ve since seen a couple in action at Goodwood a few months back. It really does look the business in my opinion.
Realistically, given that it costs £115,000 in the uk there’s no chance of me being able to afford one so although its top of my pile in terms of dream cars, the most likely next car for me to replace my V8-GT is going to be one of these:

In one of my conversations with Lotus Cars CEO, he was asking me for ideas on the replacement Esprit for '07. I told him that they should look at the Gallardo as a target. I said that the wedge shape is exactly the shape the new Esprit should have. After all, look at who designed the original concept for Gallardo's bodywork: Giugiaro! Unfortunately, Lambo beat Lotus to the design, but if the car had come out with an Esprit badge instead, I don't think many of us would be complaining.
Regarding the interior switchgear: considering that Audi is considered one of the top marques for interior design, ergonomics, fit, finish, and quality, I would say that the use Audi components is a blessing.
Depending on how things go at Lotus with the new Esprit, a Gallardo may be my next exotic (I'll keep the Esprits, of course).
Cheers,
Karl-Franz :-)

Hi I went out to watch a historics race at Pukekohe Rack Track last Sun and who should I bump into on display? A nice new yellow Gallardo. "Wow" If the new Esprit had angles like that plus a funky interior I think Lotus would be on to something. I agree that the new Esprit should be styled from it. But I don't like the new bubble shape of cars that I am seeing now. Lotus must keep the wedge look to remain different and unique.

Hey guys,
I was lucky enough to be in Fiuggi, Italy last week ( about an hour south of Rome ) , where I was stunned to see both a red Gallardo and a red Ferrari 575 park up near a square. ( have to say the silver haired Giulio Inglasias types driving them looked cool - I want to be them when I am in my 50's !! )
Anyhow, I reckoned that the Gallardo was lovely. BUT I think its wedgy and pointy styling will date quickly. The 575, in comparison, looked like people will say in 20 years time what a "classic" it was. Not sure they would say that about the Gallardo...
I think the next Esprit should have a drop dead gorgeous style, but that it should be above all efficient and purposeful. Thats what Lotus is about. I actually liked the styling of the defunct M250. Wonder if any of that will live on in the new Esprit??
And I reckon the new Carrera GT, with its aliminium extrusions and carbon bits, looks like it could have been a Lotus..I can see a lot of Elise styling cues in that car.

Hi Guys, Being an Ex Countach owner and having driven many Diablos I have found all the mid engined Lamborghini cars to be very poor handing compared to the Lotus Esprit. The trouble is that wonderful V12 is just too long and heavy and it buggers up the handling! I went to the Lamborghini 40th bash in Italy a few months ago where they were hawking around the Gallardo. I think the car does look good on paper and it has been very well received in various reviews, however the car is the new kid in town and still in its honeymoon period.
Only time will tell if is any good, or a fair comparison test with other supercars on a track!
I can't help but wonder if the occasional 4wd system would remove some of the fun, it's impossible to say without trying it. Having now seen the car in Yellow & Black I think the Gallardo is very colour critical, I prefer Yellow.
I am still a big Lambo fan, I currently have an old school 60s/70s Jarama S which is not that fast but it has an amazing turn in (for what it is) and a mental progressive Sideways nature about it, all accompanied by glorious Lambo V12 soundtrack! Its like a big Caterham 7 in nature only slower!
I'm hooked on the bloody thing! And they're cheap!
(Espada Money)
Also have V8 GT BLOODY INSANE!!! LOVE IT!!

TopStuff - I hope the next Esprit isnt styled with a alot of curves or round spots. It doesnt appeal to me at all. For instance, the F355 and 348 Ferrari are styled beautifully, the 360 I think loses the essence of Ferrari when they start to round things off. I say the next Esprit should be somewhat angular in nature. I also hope it isnt designed too futuristic, or too quaint. 2008 isnt far, but I am sure cras will look vastly different by the turn of 2010
One thing I hope we agree on is that the new Esprit must not be too big !
Keep it smallish, light and lithe. Lots of aluminium and carbon. The way Mr Chapman would like it to be..
And British bulldog is spot on about the Gallardo and four wheel drive. I reckon that 4WD is an engineering cop-out when faced with big power and lots of torque.
The joy of the Esprit V8 is that it is so fast, handles so progressively and yet it does it all without 4wd, traction devices or even a LSD. It shows how a supremely designed chassis, terrific damping, and fundamentally "right" engineering means that you do not need complex and heavy 4WD to go quickly.
An Esprit can flatter the driver and make him feel like a god. With a 4wd computer controlled gizmo, you know its the computers doing it...

Hey Guys, I Know that market demands that the Esprit must change cosmetically, but from a drivers point of view its hard to think how the car can be improved on apart from the sound of its engine, I have often wondered about limited slip diff for better traction, but then the lack of one does give it a more progressive nature if you light them up a bit when steaming out of a corner. its difficult to say its just so docile and forgiving, I love the turn in its just so crisp!! The ride is excellent, my friends 355 & 360 Ferraris feel very skittish and bumpy at speed on certain bits of road where I live, they feel like they are fighting the road surface, the Esprit just soaks it all up. Maybe just a little more of everything!
