I know a few people who have the Gravity Dropper, it has three settings, full extension, 1" drop and 4" drop, all from a switch on the bars. Easy to maintain being it's biggest USP, and from what i've read of ALL these seatposts that is quite an importanmt feature as they're not all that realiable.

The company was maveric that started them and then sold them to crank bros.
Ive had one for about 2 years now and at first i had loads of trouble with mine but give them there due i set it back and free of charge it would come back like a new post. If you keep them lubed and i fit half of an innertube on the back to stop all the mud and grit going onto the piston and its been fine for over a year now and i now have confidence in them. 3" doesnt seem much but it is and thats all needed for 98% of the riding i do, If i lower it by the seat post it is to do some very slow tecnical drops etc so dont mind puttong it down manually for the 3 or 4 times ive ever done that. Get one with the remote on the handle bar as its a lot safer that having the one with the handle under the seat. As for the weight i think they are only a bit heavier than a normal cheap seat post but i can put up with it for what it lets me do or i will take 1 slice less of malt loaf.
Buy a new one then its guarenteed in case it does go wrong.

Specialized are releasing the Command Post for 2009 (but only in 30.9mm dia). Superstar Components do a 5-inch drop one too. On-One are currently designing and testing a 6-inch drop one. Finally, the Hite Right has surfaced again - although this is not a handlebar opperated saddle dropping device.

I have a joplin with the lever under the seat.
Its ace and can help you keep a good flow going along technical trails without having to stop.
Also, 3" may not sound alot but really, its enough!
My Gt Force is a very very tall bike with the seat at xc height but dropping the seat down all the way makes it feel like a bmx! It's enough. I've heard rumour that a new version will be out soon with a 4" drop?
Also the scraper seal on the stanchion isn't all that great and easily lets fine dirt in making the action stiff. Be wary of it. I've cut an old inner tube up and covered the stanchion up to rectify this however mbuk in a recent "how to service your joplin" article mention that there is a scraper seal from a fox fork or shock which fits in place of the original and works perfectly at keeping the crud out.
I didn't notice any difference in weight when riding it.
Ps, go for the bar mounted lever option!

I popped in to my LBS at lunch and whilsht drooling over the Scott Ransom 20 carbon, i noticed that it had a Maverick post which adusted under the seat, it was brilliant movement but i was surprised to feel movement in the post even though it had never been ridden. i came back to the office and did a search on maverick and the do a handlebar remote but its still only 3" so once i get home i'll look into the other ones you suggested.
