having trouble selecting 1st and 4th gears at the mo. wonder if clutch is on way out? doesnt seem to slip tho. wondered if same had happened to anyone on here or if anyone has an idea as to cause.

It's a cable operated change - could be stretching in the heat/snagging etc.

Or it could be clutch related.

Difficult to say from where I'm sitting, tho'

If it's a 911 with a 915 (cable) 'box - could be that the selector fork on the gearbox is on its way out, which manifests itself in the way you describe - i.e. difficulty in gear selection.

if it helps you experts to diagnose the fault. the car is a 2000 model 996 c4

I'm no expert but I checked your profile first and it will be a Getrag 6 speed cable operated box, so my original comment still stands. However, no one can diagnose a fault over the net, only guess at what it might be so you can investigate further... may be quicker and simpler to take it to a tech?

spent (a lot) on my 915 for not v much really ended up adjusting it with spanner thru inspection hatch at rear seats to get the resuts needed in the end grrrr
forgot to say saw original clutch at menders though 20years+ old talk about down to rivets, did'ent slip though

it turns out the selector cables were stretched. put right by the guys at jz machtech. had an ecu upgrade at the same time as well. very pleased
