LCD TV repair experts - question for you

Much fun being had at the moment with my 32" lcd TV.
Basically it won't switch on - the power LED used to go red, flashing orange x3, then green.
Now the led stays orange and the backlights are on but dim. No picture or sound.
For a while it would work ok from cold starting but not if left on standby.
Since it turned itself onto standby around 2 weeks ago, after one offspring left it with no signal input by turning his PS2 off, it has refused to come back on.
I've replaced the power board (oh yes) but that made no difference.
I've decided to replace the backlight inverters hoping that the CCFL tubes are OK.
So - can I just replace the master inverter or do I have to replace master and slave?
Is it more likely to be one or the other inverter that's bust?
Is there an easy way to tell (I can hear buzzing at 1 side but not the other - is the buzzing inverter bust or the non buzzing one?)
When I've spent a few hundred quid on parts I'll chuck it off a tower block - all invited to watch.

Hiya
This may sound bad but 2 months ago my parents paid 600 pounds trying to fix their 2 year old 42" plasma. It didnt work properly and picture is still messed up.
I bought a 42" plasma last week for £530
my advice is if its under warranty get it fixed/replaced if it isnt get a new one.
the parts cost an incredible amount

I have one of the first widescreen Sony Trinitrons. It was £1000 back in the day (only a 28incher) but after only 3 years my mate brought his PS round. We played for a couple of hours then disconnected it, afterwhich my TV wouldn't switch back on. Took a £350 repair before it would work again.
Given that both the TV and PS are Sony products I couldn't understand why this would happen. TV repair people didn't have any useful insights either.

I had a 42" plasma fail after 2 years 5 months. Turned out the main board had died. It took just under £500 in repairs but it's back like new.
The detail to add is that under the Sale of Goods act, you've got 6 years to claim damages, which normally equate to the cost of repairs. The item needs to have not lasted as long as a normal, reasonable person would expect. I used this line with a high-street retailer and after some paperwork they refunded all repair costs.

It's made in Korea and had a 3 year warranty when I bought.
I've been onto the manufacturers and they told me to feck off as it's over 1 year old and they would have nothing to do with 3 year warranty.
So it's basically now my toy to play with.
I can get a 2nd hand master inverter for around £50 and a new one for £100.
I expect that I will end up buying a new TV but I'd like a bit of advice as to inverters for this repair.
BTW came across Pizo electric inverters looking around for info - well cool.
Home made Tazer anyone?
