Here goes....go for drive in Griff (500 preserp fairly std), fill up with 40 quids worth of v-power at usual place.

All running as it should, jumps onto motorway, give it beans, slows to 70.......very lumpy on 5th gear as though not firing on all cyl. No sign of overheating, all leads seem on tight (Magnecors 8mm blue jobs) pulled out dipstick, oil seems fine. New dissy cap and rotor arm fitted recently (months) and both Lucas. I`m an almost numpty but will give things a go (even not too scared of using a multimeter..). Seems to tick over ok, only really notice it under power in fifth ie when engine not running too fast.

Anyone had similar and can anyone advise? Car now sitting on drive awaiting to go into garage, dont think I`ll have too much time tomorrow to do....(Nearest specialists are Automedon and Trackvroad and will take it to these if I really need to but if I can take it to Joe Bloggs place would be better as is nearer.)

Sorry to go on folks....first chance I`ve had to drive it in weeks!!!!!Bug*er.

Dave.

Sounds like a misfire under load, which could be an injector fault but more likely to be ignition. See if you can work out which cylinder it is, quickest way is to look for the cold header (plastic cable tie held against it is a very easy way to judge the temperature without getting yourself burned), if you can narrow it down to a cylinder then you will very quickly be able to work out what the problem is by exchanging ignition components with adjacent cylinders.

Thanks Peter, just tried it but all headers pretty hot (my fingers know this!!). Have also tried disconnecting ECU with no joy.

Any other pointers? Really appreciate your input....

Dave. (would like to avoid wallet bashing if I can-under pressure from other half)

i have just had a similar problem with my 500

try a new iginition amplifier...ebay approx 28 pound from landrover orphanage shop

two small screw bolts and clip on .my symptons were lumpy running and then complete engine failure...i did think it was the coil but this small item was the culprit and as it is a sealed unit you cannot tell its on the way out.

Try running it in the dark and lift the lid may see some sparking..., I found a HT lead shorting on the manifold like this...causing a similar problem.

I’ve just had similar problems that took me ages to find and involved replacing all the ignition parts (including 2 coils). It turned out to be the HT leads, which were quite new and was one of the first things I’d checked, but somehow missed.

To rule them out you can get a set of 8mm silicone off ebay for £25.

Cheers,

Simon.

Thanks all. Have ordered an ign amp mod from ebay (ta, sumoone!!) and have a spare set of leads so guess I could try these out tomorrow.
Really do not think the magnecors are at fault (although I believe they arent perfect for this engine...) as theyve been on only fourish years. Maybe Ill jump in it in the morning and all will be fine (somebody mention flying, and pigs..?). Very annoyimg as it is the first time in weeks that I have had the weather and opportunity to go for a decent drive....did all of about eight miles today!

Appreciating those replies an feeling a warmth silly

Always good to hear an optimist, mate!

Did think of that as I`d just filled up but never had probs there before, so will be a last thing to check scenario......

Cheers all!

I'd never had probs where I usually refuel, then after one tank it started popping and banging like a tt and wouldn't pull for toffee. Soon as I refuelled again the problem mysteriously disappeared biggrin

I've had that also - try filling up again after using half a tank (shouldn't take long - pop out for a pint of milk or a newspaper... wink )
