really quick VAT question - wheres my return paper?
Discussion
Just a quick question, I dont know anyone else VAT registered so I cant ask them.
My VAT quarter is July / Aug / Sept and I'm sure i usually get the return paperwork (the green sheet) well in advance.
But its not here yet... should I start putting on my tinfoil hat and worrying that I'm going get a visit?
Only kidding, but I did wonder when the green sheet arrives.

Only kidding, but I did wonder when the green sheet arrives. You should be getting it fairly soon. Your quarter ends on 30 September. The return needs to be sent to HM Revenue and Customs before 31 October together with any payments due.
So you have just over six weeks before you need to panic.
Have you got your Certificate of VAT Registration yet?

Thay will also accept a "home made" return. If the oriiginal blank form goes astry, I sometime make a new "blank" return by amending the photocopy of an earlier return with the dates and amounts changed - and an original signature added at the bottom.
I always photocopy returns before sending them in so I always have the basis of a "master" VAT return form if necessary.
So far, the VAT Office has never rejected one of these "adopted" forms.

Yes I've always scanned the return before sending it (just incase! and partly because I'm part of the tin-hat brigade!)
Interesting to know they accept copies too.
I'll give them a buzz if it doesnt arrive in the next week or two.
I always put a note in my diary 'Send VAT' with a big asterisk next to it.
In 16 years I've only had one problem when I mislaid the form. I contacted HMCE to let them know but by the time they replied with a duplicate, it was almost too late. I posted it off first class the day before it was due, and of course the splendid postal service took two days instead of one. HMCE did send me a letter saying they might fine me, but nothing happened.
It's ironic that we have to do things to the exact day, while Govt departments can fart about for weeks.

Unfortunately this is one form you can't download, below is cut and paste from HMRC website:
Forms
VAT 100
Description
Use the VAT 100 VAT Return to make your VAT Return. This form is automatically sent to VAT registered traders if and when they need one - it can't be downloaded or ordered online. You can, however, use the VAT Online Services to submit your VAT Return.
You either need to ring them and get a new one sent out, which may be too late if its QE 31/8/08, or do the DIY option as mentioned above.

Hope my paranoia isnt spreading - sorry if I'm worrying a bit early, but I'm sure its normally here by now.
Anyway:
I did give them a quick call today and they said its probably on its way in the post now, but to be on the safe side the chap said he would send out a duplicate just incase the original had gone AWOL.

I must admit you got me a bit jittery too. So I 'phoned them and requested copy. I began to think it was already October, so rushed with Vat invoices etc. I thought I hadn't many for September, then I realised afterwards that it was still September. Doh!!! Guess what? Two arrived this morning. They must think I'm mad. A common assumption.
