can't think of what to get my dad for his birthday. He's gonna be 46 ( or 47 ) and i have no idea what i can get him!
He works away a few days a week, so i though of getting him something gadgety, but as he already takes his laptop and now has an iphone there's not a lot else he needs to take with him.
He's getting a new car soon, but he already has a bluetooth thing and sat nav so can't think of anything to get for his car! car has an ipod connection thing too, so no need for an iphone dock

always wanted to get him a nice watch, but he says he's happy with the one hes got ( rubber strap animal watch that's years old!) even though most of his mates have tag's or rolex watches.

other idea was a nice all in one remote for the lounge, so he can control the telly, sky, surround sound etc with one remote. any recommendations on a nice good remote?

otherwise if you were, or are 40ish what would you want for you'r birthday! ideally something technical/gadgety or something for the car. actually i could get him a speed camera detector?
any other idea's would be great or ill just buy him some nice bottles of wine!

40-ish here. And feeling older, today.

I know your pain: you just cannot buy him anything that he can't just buy himself. So, don't try. Buy/organise something that he cannot buy: time with you, or the whole family. Get cinema tickets, or theatre, or Opera or Ballet, or karting/tracking, whatever floats his boat. And make sure everyone comes along!

Far better than yet another shirt that he doesn't even like. yes

cheers, yeah i was looking at trackday/driving experience stuff yesterday but he's not really a petrolhead - and although he'll probably enjoy it i can't imagine he'd choose something like that.

another idea i had was getting tickets for something, but most of the things i've seen seem to fall on the days he works away, which is a bit of a pain. Guess i could find something closer to there, and we could go down and meet him there.
maybe i'll have another look at what's on

as for the hooker suggestions, not sure what mum would say. lol

Rob Brydon tickets would have been good, but all the shows are either sun, mon or tues so he wouldn't be able to go to them

If you do decide to go down the universal remote route then take a look at the Harmony range from Logitech. I've got an 885 and it's a bit of a bh to program, but once up and running it's excellent.

Me too, or some decent hankies - I can tell you that I feel terrible when my kids buying me expensive (and I mean anything over about £20) stuff which I don't really want.

I feel even worse when my wife does it though, because she just charges it to my credit card. cry

yeah i did start a thread asking about the harmony one's they looked good, then decided to delete it and start a new thread asking for other ideas!

wine cooler could be an idea, but i think he may already have one of them.
He does like his wine though, so maybe i'll have a look at something along the lines of that too

does he have a favourite whisky? (or similar drink?)

I was chatting with my Dad months ago about whiskys and he said that he likes laphroaig, so for his birthday next month im ordering a much older (and more rare) version from t'interweb (its rather difficult to find anything other than the 10 year old version in any shops)

I like the idea of a date with some hookers, but as your mum may not share the same exitement as your dad how about a compromise and something like a hot air ballon ride or a flying lesson. Something outside the box is always good.
