As I have only been able to spend a couple weeks with my S4 in the past 6 months, and have 152 days more before returning home (but who’s counting), I get my car fix from watching car related movies and racing. Last night I was watching an F1 race, and was able to switch from the commentary (which was in German anyway, and I don't speak German) to the second audio feed which was nothing but the race sounds.. awesome! Anyway, back to the point. What are your favorite car movies?
I have several, and even though some of them don't really have a great story, they have some gratuitous car action. So here are a couple of mine in no particular order.

The Spy Who Love Me
My first "lust" of a car

Cannonball Run
I know, kinda cheesy, but some awesome car action!

Gone in 60 Seconds (recent release)
Had sooo much more potential but still cool.

Viva Las Vegas
In between all that singing, there was some cool classic car race action.

I know ther are many more that I can't think of right now, so post your fav's

"2 Fast 2 Furious" O.k I know its a bit young boy racer. But boy they had some fun. Oh and the blond boy in it is not too shabby either.

"Gone in 60 seconds" - Nicholas Cage in some nice mustangs.

Ok... you had to get me going...

Well let's see... great car movies... in no particualar order...

Bullitt... 1967... Steve McQueen

The effect that Mustang FastBack had on the psyche of adolecent boys as Steve McQueen double-clutched in pursuit of the Bad Guys in their Dodge Charger is worthy of scientific study...

Vanishing Point...1970... Barry Neuman

Amazing mix of Raw power of that Dodge 440 Sixpack Challenger, existentialism and White Cross amphetamines as it blazes across country toward eternity.... "Are you out there Kowalsky...???"

Doctor No...1963... Sean Connery, Ursula Andress

First of the Bond sequels. Sunbeam (thanks Ernest!) Also, Ursula Andress actually lived down the street from me in Lausannes, CH as I was growing up, saw her weekly in the market,... she gave me something to shoot for in life..lol

Goldfinger...1964...Sean Connery, Pussy Galore

Showed what a little inventiveness can do to an Aston Martin BD5.

Gone in 60 seconds...1999... Nick Cage, Angie Jolie and Bobby DuVall

Incredible collection of cars and the fastest reverse gear ever installed in a Shelby GT500..!!

Le Mans... 1968... Steve McQueen

Great, if long, inside look into the world of Gran Prix and Can-Am racing. Amazing crash of Porsche 917, wonderful shots of the Chapparals and GT-40's and Ferraris. Trying to bring the smell, feel and excitement of argueably the pinnacle of racing almost broke McQueen financially.

Gran Prix...1962 ... James Garner

Shows the Formula 1 racing curcuits with amazing accuracy. James Garner, as Pete Aron, an upstart American, throws his Lotus/BRM through the turns with reckless abandon. Wonderful shots of some incredible Scuderie Hardware in action also.

Days of Thunder... 1998...Tom Cruise, Robert DuVall

Maverick does NASCAR. 'Nuff said!

Driven...2000...Sylvester Stallone

The Italian Stallion does CART. Lots of cameos by true CART drivers. To call this movie Bad, is simply not adequate.

The Italian Job...2001

Suspenseful thriller with lots of amazing driving. Probably did more to sell the new 'Mini' than all the past reverie about it's older namesake.

Casino Royale... 1972... Peter Sellers, David Niven

I mention this Bond spoof only for the fact that Sellers, as James Bond jumps into his Lotus 23B parked outside the Casino in pursuit of the Bad Guys.

The French Connection...1972... Roy Scheider, Gene Hackman

Popeye Doyle's (Hackman) pursuit of the French heroin Magnate in his Pontiac Gran Prix under the elevated trains in NYC is legendary.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang...1969... and a Cast of thousands

Interesting collection of cars of all types. Interestingly, the story was penned by Sir Ian Fleming, creator of the 007 James Bond Series.

The Great Race...Tony Curtis

Lots of interesting vintage cars.

CannonBall Run... 1974... Burt Reynolds, Jerry Reed

Great spoof of the famed CannonBall Run. Lots of interesting cars, a few admirable babes and lots of Corn.

The Enforcer...1974...Clint Eastwood

Great scenes of 'Dirty Harry' evading a bomb laden R/C Corvette in his 428 Ford Police Special through the streets of San Francisco.

Gran Prix Racer...1959... Kirk Douglas

Maybe the Grandaddy of them all. A bit mellow dramatic, but gives a good look at the old hard scabble days when drivers wore leather flying helmets, had no roll bars or other safety equipment and really suffered the effects of long races. Showed the commercial viability of 'Car' flicks, leading others to follow.

The Spy Who Loved Me... 1976(?)...Roger Moore

Great Bond film and intro of the Espit.

2 Fast, 2 Furious ...2000 (2002...Thanks Loysusa1)

Lots of BoyRacer action. Best flick made showing how to scrub your front tires. Not a great flick, but lots of Riceburners w/ Big Wings .

Basic Instinct...1994...Sharon Stone, Michael Douglas

Great shots of Hers and Hers 1990 Esprit SE's. Great crash scene (the car held up amazingly). Ms. Stone saved the company lots of dough on wardrobe, probably wore out millions of VCR Pause buttons throughout the world. Wonder if leatherique removes '???' stains??

"You did notice I'm not wearing any underwear....!"

Happy Motoring!... Jim'85TE

"The Crowd Roars" starring James Cagney

1930's Indy car racing at it's best. The best ever racing movie.

LotusGuy..

DB5 not introduced until Goldfinger. In Doctor No he drove (briefly) a Sunbeam. DB5 also used at the beginning of Thunderball, as was Bond's personal "Bentley" when he was picknicking with Sylvia Chase...

(Fleming had Bond in a Bentley in the books. One that he had purchased after "some idiot had wrapped it around a lamp post" or some such)

Jim.

Did you leave out ANY movie title? You had me going until I saw the title "2 Fast 2 Furious". You will never see 5-lane drag racing on the streets. (By the way, that movie was filmed in 2002 and released in 2003.

Lots of good movies mentioned above; most of the Bonds (TSWLM of course!); classics like Le Mans, Grand Prix, Italian Job; cult films like Bullit, Italian Job, Vanishing Point.

But there are many others which have great action, a couple that spring to mind;

1. Dirty Mary Crazy Larry; ignore the wooden acting, the best actors are the Dodge and Chevy.
2. Its a Mad Mad World; some great scenes in the days when stuntmen were expendable, no crappy CGI here!
3. To Live and Die In L.A. ;great film all round.
4. Ronin; overrated but OK.

And please, don't anyone else mention that garbage "Gone in 60 seconds", the very premise that our "hero" car thieves are all knowledgeable and passionate car enthusiasts (able to tell a Ferrari 275GTB by the thunk of its bootlid, and only denied legitimate ownership by being born the wrong side of the tracks) instead of idle, druggy, selfish scum makes me want to puke my guts up.

Hey, GRAND PRIX was James Garner - not Steve McQueen... but a great movie just the same. A movie like that could not even be made today!
Now back to Steve McQeen... that would be LE MANS. Also a pretty good movie, but over half eneded up on the floor of the edit room. Bond was not always in a Bently in the books. The Bond movie that made the world want a Lotus, THE SPY WHO LOVED ME was first a book. In the book version, Bond drove a Saab Sonet. Thank God for Lotus marketing! There are 5 movies, and they are all different, titled VANISHING POINT. All are pretty good. Also on my list would be some older unremembered movies like THE YOUNG RACERS, the original Tobi Haleki (sp?) GONE IN 60 SECONDS, GUM BALL RALLY, and that wich first caught my interest at the age of 5+/- SPEED RACER. Yes, I know it was a cartoon...

The list could go forever! For those of you with Speed Channel, I encourage you all to e-mail them and ask that they bring back the Saturday Night Drive Inn. They always had great car movies on with Bruce Dern commenting...

Drive topless!

...Correct - and thank God they wrote thier own story for the movie as well. If you thought that the movie was a bit camp - pick up the book

It was one of the only Fleming Bonds that I did not enjoy... Fleming covered himself well though, because at the beginning of the book he claimed to have found the manuscript on his desk and that it was "penned" by the female from the book.

Cheers
