Is no service history really bad if the car looks good and serviced? I mean of course history is very important but if one finds a good looking car going cheap because of this is it worth persuing? Its a 993 rs asking about £40,000 less than book.

Basic rule of thumb "If something looks too good to be true, it probably is". Just remember you may be a good, fair and honest person but not everyone else is, especially some of those selling used cars.

If it's that cheap I would either avoid it or get a qualified Porsche engineer that you can REALLY trust to give it a thorough inspection.

Whats the vendors reason for no history? You have every right to seem suspicous, especially if it is an 'RS'. These cars tend to be owned by proper enthusiasts who will look after things like service history records as they know that they are worth there weight when it comes to sale time. But IMPO i would...
1. Do an ultra HPI check
2. Get into contact with the previous recorded keeper to get an idea of how he looked after it.
3. Ring around every OPC in the country (assuming its been in the UK for a good while?) and armed with the chassis number ask each of them to check their computers to see if they have ever worked on this particular car.
4. If you decide to go ahead and buy it, have a OPC do an inspection before handing over any cash.

Priced £40K under list!! blimey thats a bargain so the seller should then give you 20k or so just for you buying it, sounds like a bargain to me and a nice little earner, I could do with a spare £20K- whats the phone number

No matter what the price you will have probs selling it without FSH. I would say a 993 C2 would struggle to even get £15k LHD and £20k RHD with absolutely no history & it its a LHD I would be very twitchy that it wasnt a stolen european car, for a UK car its easier to check up on, but cavat emptor & all that.

Edited price coz I has butter fingers

hey iguana, its a rhd 993 c2 with 95,000 on the clock advertised for £21,000 ono. A cheap 993 but you re right it would have no resale value, although if I had a 993 for that money and the car checked out ok, then I'm not so sure I would sell it.

Topcat thats not exactly cheap to me, I'd want it well sub £20K. (just edited my figures I typed 29k by mistake Doh!)

Besides how do you know the miles are genuine with no history?

So why no history?? does it have any history at all??

A 993 will cope better with the miles than earlier engines ref needing a top end rebuild but you will still hav to budget of spending £3K 'ish' if you are keeping it for a bit.

I rang the guy and he has had an offer on it but im to ring on monday afternoon incase it hasn't sold. I didnt go in to much detail after that, also the car is in chelsea and im in devon so i think i'll keep looking. I miss my sc and really need another 911, this time one I can use more as an every other day car, although it still wont be taken out in the wet, not because of the dirt but the risk of going backwards into a hedge.

You big tart, you've really really got to mistreat a 993C2 for it to bite anyway.

Best you get ya self on a driver development course with messers Don Palmer etc, no point in owning it & not driving it in the wet- you do live in the UK after all!!

LOL. I'm an ex kart champion and have won a few rounds of Formula Ford at Castle Coombe driving for a friend of mine when he was injured. Its just I would hate to lose my lovely road going porsche to playing in the rain. Good point about living in Britian though.Of course it would go out in the rain, I have to at least have the good intention of using my VW but im sure when they re both in my garage the VW keys will be gathering dust.

Confused of Berks replys-

So you are a kart champ & have won races in Formula Fords, both of which are twitchy little buggers on the limit, but are scared of putting the most driver friendly aircooled 911 ever made through a hedge????

I've driven Formula Firsts which are renowned as being less twitchy than F Fords and a 993 is a pussy cat in comparison to get back into line when its out of shape

So stop worrying about it, a Scumacher like yourself should have no problems

iguana, I have just agreed a price on a low milage 965 so the 993 is out of the window for the moment. Have to move some money around which could take a couple of weeks. Probably going to be the longest 2 weeks ever.
You re right about the ffords being twichy and the 911 more seated on the road but you can leave your race car in the gravel and drive home in your porsche, it doesnt work the other way around unfortunately. cant wait, cant wait!
