Is there a lead that can connect a laptop to an LCD tv? And if so, where would one buy such a lead?

Yes.

With laptops and LCDs you have two options first is to get a VGA lead and go from the VGA output to the VGA input on the LCD (will need to set up laptop to output this way) or secondly it may have a S Video out put and your TV may have a S video input so use that instead (VGA is best option).

Do you need a separate component cable to get the sound working if you use the S Video ?

VGA is best, get one from a PC shop.

You'll need to handle sound separately, either male 3.5mm to male 3.5mm phono (ie headphone connections), or a male 3.5mm to male phono (red and white) sockets (like an ipod to stereo wire).

Yes.

Whilst S video does support sound the output will be from your graphics card which doesnt.

A DVI to HMDI cable will give you VGA quality resolution and sound with a single cable. Laptop may not have a DVI port though.

Its such a bullst way of connecting your laptop thru a VGA cable .

I have been using this since 2004 to watch films on the telly and I found that its nearly not worth the hassle .

The laptop graphics card doesnt always remmebr the settings to have the tv as 2nd monitor and so on .

Best way is to use your laptop as media server and xbox or ps3 as the playback device .

The ps3 is the better of the 2 as it has alot more codecs dont qoute me on that as i havent used the xbox for over a year now

My laptop has an HDMI socket on it, gives a great picture and lets me display at 1080p, great stuff.

Have another PC next to my TV which is using a VGA cable but I don't know whether it's due to its age or restrictions of VGA but it doesn't support any decent resolutions and is just more hassle than it's worth so I've taken to playing videos through the xbox streamed from my main PC.

Yes thats the way of doing it , but 1080p is only possible when you actually got 1080p media otherwise is the same rsolution

No it wont. DVI from the PC does not support sound.

On my HP laptop I have to set the TV as 2nd monitor for the VGA to work .
Even on my old desktop It didnt always work as the graphics card was playing up with the vga connection .

You can watch Iplayer on the ps3 and xbox , in near enough full screen
