Has anyone got any experience of this lens?

I've been considering changing to it for a while, to replace my current setup of 24-105L and 70-300 IS (the former i've never been particularly impressed with). I've read a few things that say the 28-300 is pretty poor in relation to the rest of the L range but not really seen any specifics. I presume a wide angle would be a good companion as 28 min might be a bit tight on a 1d with a 1.3 crop.

Can anyone offer some views on it?

Depends how badly you want to minimise lens changes IMHO. I would be looking at a 17-40 2.8L, a 50 1.8II, a 70-200 2.8L and a 1.4 converter. That would give you a wider focal length range plus better aperture across the board. The 28-300 is undoubtedly a cracking, versatile lens, but will you regret being limited to f/5.6 at full stretch?

My suggestions come to £1650-ish but I would bet Kerso or Warehouse Express would do better than thar if you buy them all at once.

good advice from miniman.
i sold the 28-300 as it was very "fluffy" at the extreme focal lengths and not all that fast (and heavy).
stick with miniman !

Just to be clear, at that budget you are looking at the non-IS 70-200. However I took a deep breath and bought the IS version and if I'm honest, I can count the number of times I've needed the IS on one finger.

I used to have the older 35-350 L and found it very good.
Not as good as a 24-70 and 70-200 are but more like the same quality of the 28-135 IS.
