All,

Ok right I've just changed my front pads to Mintex pads and it was quick, easy and...well...now the the car stops differently! With this in mind I thought it might be interesting exchanging views on what pads are good for what.

The reason I went for mintex 1144 pads is that they get good reviews, they are reasonably priced and I trust eliseparts.com. I was thinking about the pagid pads but they are up there with the original lotus parts.

My experience so far is that they have a good initital bite especially when still cool. They have a nice feel too when used under normal braking but I do think they fade a bit too quickly under heavy braking. I was quite shocked I managed to get them to fade after a quick blast on a public road. It was nothing serious at all and the car still stops like I've thrown an achor out the back but I definately had to use them a bit more agressively than the original pads.

Has anyone else experienced anything like that?

If you've only just changed them, they will probably still be bedding in to your disks, so not at optimum yet. If you genuinely did get them to fade on public road, and you have just recently fitted them... then I'd suggest you're maybe working them too hard during bed-in, and wouldn't be surprised if you glazed them...

my 2p.

No I gave them good time to bed in. I spent a good period of time doing the usual gentle stops before getting firmer.

I don't think they are glazed as they perform really well until I give them a real hammering. As I said it isn't serious and I am comparing to stock pads, they are just different not worse, if that makes sense?

Did you let them cool after bedding in then, so they had done a full heat cycle? I had 1144's on a previous car which I tracked (heavier than the Elise) & didn't suffer any major fading from memory. They didn't last that long though.

FWIW, I'm using YellowStuff R's on the Elise and can't grumble so far (yet to track them though).

Yep, I did a nice set of stops for about 30 mins round some quiet roads. Then back home and let them cool. Then later that day did some more and slowly increased the braking forces.

what discs do you have on? ...when you say you get fade, its usually down to a disc/pad combo...you need discs that will dissapate heat properly otherwise the pads will heat up and give 'brake fade'

this is why differnt people's experiences of pads can be so wildy different.......

The only time I had any fade problems with 1144s was after an extended session on track.
I'm now running yellowstuffs which I prefer and have found them fine on road (no noise) and on track. I also used to find that the 1144s could occasionally be a bit 'grabby' but don't get any of that with the yellowstuffs. Another bonus with the yelloowstuffs is that they don't create as much dust as the 1144s (which are truly awful in this regard).

Just standard drilled discs. I did have a look today and I spotted that the drilled holes were full of crap, almost completely blocked.

1144's wouldn't put anything else on the 111s - they are superb for road use..never had any probs with them

When I had my 111S (S1) I used EBC GreenStuff and felt that the pedal actually had some "feel" whereas the standard factory pads felt very wooden in comparison.

Money no object road and occasional track - Pagid RS42's.
Money an object road and occasional track use - SBS Protrack's for me.

The latter I'd go for now everytime to be honest. Almost indiscernable from the Pagid's I'd had previously and considerably cheaper.

If however you want something that will stop the car like you've just dropped anchor, all day, everyday, with sustained track use, then Pagid RS14's are the mack-daddy.

so far I would stick with the New Yellowstuff R pads over the montix 1144's. Only a few quid more but far better.

What are the negatives with RS14's?

I adore my RS42's but they do eat the discs!

Gooby, you must be very hard on brakes - the discs I gave you had done 40 odd trackdays and still looked new compared to your old ones. Rs14's are very hard on discs until they get heat in them, then they seem fine. Better for track than road as the initial bite is not great when they are cold. I will be interested to see how yellowstuff turn out in terms of disc wear.

I replaced RS14s with RS42s by mistake. Much prefer the 42s both on road and on track. The 14s seem to have alot less feel and are a bit quick to grab. However I did replace the front discs at the same time, standards to Turbo Grooved. all around a worse braking experience. Now looking forward to the delivery of new 42s to try with the discs.

RS14s are track pads, squeal like a pig on the road, and eat discs ...I was doing a set of discs to a set of pads in about 10K miles on them !

RS42s as per above or the SBS for a cheaper option

discs make more of a difference too for heavy track use...stay away from cheap OEM cheesium discs - AP ones are best but the most expensive too as always frown

Very embarassing, I only put those disks on last week. The old ones had no grooves! I have just been told that my rear pads need replacing URGENTLY. I was just to click on RS42's (as usual) but just wondering about the 14's.

Yep, I am hard on brakes. 4th set of discs on front and second on rear...
Wear rates are better since I changed away from OEM..

If you're up for trying a change, source some SBS Protracks and see what you think. I've found them perfect on the current car, which probably has a bit more power/weight than yours Goobs.
