Buying shares....

Morning all,
I'm interested in buying shares in companies (on the NYSE etc...), how do I go about doing this?
Is there a trading platform I can use?
Does anyone else buy shares this way? - if so how do you buy them?

Thanks for your reply - With Etrade do you put money in your online account and buy with that? is there a minimum payment?

yes, they have a money fund which you can transfer into. It should all be detailed on the website. I used it a few years ago and worked very well.
