help again
last night i started to drive car got no boost and past 70 degrees temp the car threw out ALOT of smoke out the exhust and covered the road for a mile, so i stopped checked oil, oil presuure ok.
limped it home and drove at 50mph the whole way and still no turbo but under 70 degrees no smoke
HELP, i assume i have blown it up, any places that do turbos or any diagnosis PLEASE

Sounds like you did what I did to mine ie blown turbo.
Mine basically sent a bit of the manifold gasket down the exhaust manifold into the turbine blades and whoof! no boost and loads of blue smoke. Check the gasket for leaks. While you are there have a look at the manifold itself for cracks, this is livable with for a while I think (as long as its a small crack)

They did my blower its either a rebuild, swap or replace. Mine was a swap because the shroud or casing had fractured. They took a little longer to do it too because they didn't realise the (S4) Esprit had a custom outlet valve thingy. Worth letting them know exactly what spec it is, could save time.
The rebuild is about 250, swap about 450 and replace is about 1000!!!!!!!!
Good luck with the brakes, do you know a good independent specialist? Where are you?

Perhaps the temp allows a crack to open???? which stays closed when cold. Not unheard of I think, if you get it onto a lift and run it it until hot it may show you exactly where the problem is.
Paul Matty is in Bromsgrove, I have heard good things about him. Shame you are where you are as you are about equal distance from most of the specialists I know of. ie miles! Having said that if the labour rate is that different from him and, say John hazzard in Hemel Hempstead or PNM in Wallasey Merseyside it may be worth the drive for a big job, I take mine to SJ Sportscars in Devon, a 2hour drive but Steve is very good and the labour rate would be astranomical from SGT in Maidenhead where I bought it. If you are at all mechanically minded getting a Lotus Service Notes and whipping the turbo off yourself would save you a fair few quid as Turbo technics aren't that far from you, Brackmills,Northampton.

Before you blow a gasket worrying about a cracked exhaust manifold, I suspect the problem lies merely with a worn out Turbine bearing and oil seal. If the manifold gasket were to have torn the turbine wheel, you turbo would simply have stopped turning. It would not explain the presence of oil in the combustion chamber - the source of the smoke. Once the turbo heats up, the bearing/seal housing expands and allows the already faulty seal to leak, drawing oil through the plenum and into the cylinders where it is combusted.
I suspect that your car has somewhere between 35K and 45k on the Odo. This is the spot where most Turbos simply wear out. Imagine spinning at 30k RPM for 3.5m + minutes or so, you'd be worn out too...
Remove the intake hose to the Turbo and feel around for oil inside with your finger, if anything more than a film of oil comes off on your finger, the turbo oil seal is blown requiring it's replacement.
Visit a Diesel Repair shop, preferrably one which is authorised to do Garrett/Aireasearch work, and they can fit a new bearing and seal and spin balance the turbo for a somewhat moderate cost. Hope this helps. Happy Motoring! Jim'85TE

right the turbo blades/spindle etc etc are fine no oil anywhere (oh btw the car has on done 8k on a p reg) my garage bloke came up last night and says it looks like a back seal, but he needs to look properly, the car runs and starts fine, and he is a little confused why there is no boost at all.
i live only 13-14miles from peter smith lotus, but the prices are a joke to be really honest. remember getting a price for a headlight module, peter smith price was £285 not fitted and sjsportscars was £85, something wrong somewhere

A Back Seal..?? Is that the rear main seal..?? I had a new one fail on my car, but the characteristics of this failure are simply oil leaking from the car, which gets pregressively worse over a short period of time.
There is almost no place for the oil to smoke, the hot exhaust parts are well out of the way and the only thing which could make the loose oil smoke is the clutch, but again, the oil will have a tendency to be driver away from this area due the the centrufugal action of the flywheel.
I am confused. Please enlighten me as the failure and correction become better known. Thanks. Happy Motoring! Jim'85TE

the cost is quite good
£100 if just bearing
£150 if seal and bearing
£400 if it need new housing/spindle/blades etc etc etc
and the pick it up free by motorbike courier then tell you the price and if you dont want it done they bring it back free, they also do a full diagnostic check and tell you WHY it broke in the first place. and give you a 2 year gurantee

That is good news, and pretty much what I suspected. But, just a point, there is one bearing and a seal on either side of it (the exhaust side and the fresh air side).
You really need to have both the seals and the bearing replaced. Even if they think it's not leaking now, it would be a shame if they started leaking shortly after the Turbo has been refitted. Also, most shops merely replace the center section of the Turbo with what is known as a cartridge. This contains the bearing and seals. They reuse the turbines and turbine housings and shaft. This is ok provided that all components are carefully checked for signs of wear and most importantly that the entire unit is dynamically spin balanced to at least 30,000 RPM. Not every shop is capable of doing this balancing, so research the shop you choose carefully to be sure that this is part of the quoted work. The repair prices you quote are suspiciously low, so I suspect they may not be including this service. A typically low price for a proper job is about $375USD, and I have seen quotes as high as $600USD. Failure to have this performed will result in premature failure of the repaired Turbo.
Also, after installation, make a practice of either letting the car idle at least two minutes once at your destination before shut-down or staying off boost for at least 3 miles before your destination. This allows the bearing to cool down so that the oil trapped in the bearing housing, once the engine stops and ceases flowing cool oil to the bearing, is not superheated on shutdown converting some of the oil's components to coke which will destroy the bearing in short order. it comes with a 2 year gurantee on all parts so should be ok, also it may be cheap becuse i only pay trade prices on everything as i am a sleeping partner in a small garage buisness, (doesnt mean i know anything about engines as you can see ha ha ha), it goes away tommo so i will get the exact price and reason it happen soon i hope

well the results are in lol:-
not just the seals and bearings, i have killed the turbo, i have bent the spindle, and a blade has snapped aswell
reason for this is becuase the esprit does not come with a dump valve as standard unlike 80% of turbo cars.
somy advice to anyone is buy a dump valve and save your turbo, if you dont like the swwwoosshhh buy a recirculating one instead
