Unless you are a large organisation with a complex process to create your product/service it's not worth the cost of instigating.
(Assuming you want to improve a process but don't have the internal resource to do so) you're better off with a terrier-like management consultant (like me
) who will keep on asking questions, (I'm very good at "yeah, but why?") until the root cause of any issue has been discovered. Will have the same effect as 6 Sigma.

Black Belt six sigmas think they are gods and somehow demand good money.
Waste of time.
Yup! That's my experience anyway. And they drop their 'qualification' into conversation at every available opportunity. *yawn*Waste of time.
At motorola they made everybody do white & yellow badges (lowest Levels) and yet they still can't get it right.

Quite. Someone with a black-belt in ju-jitsu would be better than six-sigma black belt. Actually, you'd be better off hiring Dr Raoul M Fury with his black belt in ju-ju....(Assuming you want to improve a process but don't have the internal resource to do so) you're better off with a terrier-like management consultant (like me

It works well for some applications, but for others it's not so good. For example, if you manufacture millions of widgets but only have a 90% yield, you could improve that by improving the process looking for defects. If you hand-assembly a part you could reduce assembly time just by examining the motion of the person(s) doing the work (by using pedometers for example).
Some six sigma projects on our company have been scraping the bottom of the barrel though - trying to reduce the cost of a mature product by chosing newer cheaper parts is not what six sigma should be used for!

I find it quite interesting and have definately considered a future in it.
I do agree with it being "Over Hyped" in most conversations though.
