Hi All,

Has anybody had any luck stopping their brakes squealing? (I am assuming it's a common problem...) Mine are starting to drive me mad now and the car is turning heads not because of the sound of the V8, but because of the horrible squeal that is bad enough to make dogs explode.

The guys over at Dulfords did try baking the pads before putting them on the car (?!!?) but it's not helped, and I am loathe to put the car back in the garage to rack up more bills that might not solve the problem.

Any suggestions?

Cheers!

I’ve seen threads with people putting the strangest things behind the pads.

I have no idea what Andy at APM did to mine, but it took it from unbearably loud and annoying to silent (ish).

Shims, copper something, silicone? Lots of solutions I think.

Someone with something more useful to say will come along soon…

You mean like this - happens at about 20 secs smile... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pdi2WxpyGAA

It used to happen on mine occasionally under moderately hard braking, a thin smear of CoppaSlip on the back of the pads cured it. Other people say use a blob of silicone.

I can only imagine baking them is in effect bedding them in, new pads can be a bit noisy to start with.

I assume there is no lip on the discs as again new pads can pick up on this....sometimes you have to chamffer the edge of the pad.

Silicone on the metal backing of the pad does seem to work & has a melting point of over 1000C which is why it can also be used on exhaust joints instead of gaskets.

Hi,
I have red stuff pads, with shims, rusty old discs and no squeel.

Hmm, I have fairly new mintex pads on mine, so since they are new I'm not too keen on changing yet. any info on the best place to source the shims???

When this happened on mine ( its only the rears normally the fronts might just give a brief squeak when pulling up)
I tried :
Copaslip on the back - worked for about 10 miles
Siliconing the pad to the piston - stop steh pads from rattling at low speed but doesn't stop the squeal
Softer pads - didn't work
Fitting the sticky anti-squeal pads - didn't work
Making a stainless steel shim to go between the pad and the piston - worked a treat they still squealed a bit but the decibel were vastly reduced more a shouty mouse rather than angry elephant
