Hello,

Don't think I've ever posted in here before but here goes! Could be completely off the mark, but I have certainly never seen or heard of a 315 before, yet I spotted this one today in Frankfurt. Was it actually a 1.5 litre? I thought 316 was the smallest engine (and I'd always assumed that was a 1600...) but perhaps not? This one a 4 speed manual and had single headlights.

So - is it something unusual or have I got all excited about nothing?

Leo

Indeed. As I approached (with haste on my trusty mountain bike) I thought it must have been a 316 with a bit of the badge broken off. I actually went past it and came back to double check! Definitely a '5'.

Blimey, I'm struggling to remember this one. It was never sold in the UK. I'm pretty certain that it was a 316 in 'poverty spec' produced a result of the downturn in markets at the time.

At that time the E21 was pretty basic, I think we added on for heated rear window! I suspect it would have had no HRW, plastic upholstery, narrower wheels (steel of course) and possibly a single choke carb.

Looks like someone has loved it though, bloody good nick for a poverty spec car.

It certainly didn't have leather seats! Orangey/brown (love the 70's) ones IIRC. Closer inspection of the original photos I have here shows that it does indeed have a HRW, perhaps the original buyer was feeling flush.

It was in great nick but to be honest, most old cars in Germany seem to be very well looked after. I suspect that is due to their ever so strict TUV (MOT) test, plus it seems that Germans in general look after their cars very well (not often does one spot a dirty unpolished car here, it seems).

The 315 a real car. Although wasn't produced for long I believe. I think it is indeed a poverty spec car. Likely a detuned 1.6
Looks in good nic though smile
There is a little information on them here:

Yep...and I'm fairly sure we did even have them here in the U.K 'back in the day'...but it's so long ago now that I'm struggling to remember!

Other 'poverty spec' BMWs that spring to mind were the 1502...and even E9 2.5 CS !!! I mean what were they thinking with that!? laugh Who wants a "poverty spec/luxury coupe" ?
