hi all

after abit of advise,,,ive just installed a GM ally powerglide into my manta, i bought the glide as a "working" glide complete with t/convertor and flex plate, was told it was out of a corvette, The problem i have is i only have reverse in all gears!....as im not planning on driving it in reverse all the time it would be very handy to have forward gears!, has anyone heard of this before! i really know very little about these and was thinking if someone would be kind enought to shed some light on the issue! this is a "budget" project so taking it to someone will probley cost me a arm and a leg!

thanks for your time smile

sounds like either the manual valve inside is not connected to the lever outside, the rooster comb is loose or broken,or the reverse clutch is stuck on.

going on what andys said, I'd pull the pan off and check the shifter linkage is all connected. You'll see what Andy means by rooster comb. It's a spring loaded detent plate which positions the valve in the position within the valve body for gear selection. The rooster comb is what gives the firm notchy shift between gears. If any of it's loose and it's not operating the valve it could be stuck in the last gear it was in. Drop the pan and have somebody shift the box, you'll see straight away if it's operating properly.

Has anyone got any links to the workings of a Powerglide? I'll never be using one but I'm intruiged as to how a two speed 'box works without burning out drastically slipping clutch packs.

BTW, what I know about auto boxes could be written on a gnat's arse with a blunt pencil.

Cheers fella- I never think to look at Wiki.

EDIT: except that tells me absolutely nothing about how it works!

You need http://www.amazon.com/Powerglide-Trans-Hp1355-Chev...

I have the old copy that Carl Munro printed himself before he sold the rights to the new publisher.

Feel free to PM me for a reply with "attachment"

that's cool Andy and if I thought I may need one then you would be the only person I would approach, but all I'm interested in is how they work. I wouldn't feel comfortable without a clutch pedal!
