Two weeks ago, the city of Orlando FL installed 'red light cameras' at seven intersections in the metro area. The publicity campaign, which really rammed-home the seriousness of the offense of blazing through a red light and potentially killing innocent road-users, by announcing hefty ($125) fines - but no points on your license (assuming you've got one).
On tonights news, it transpires that in the 14 days since the cameras were activated 1200 red light violations have been recorded at those seven sites.
If you're coming here on holiday, bring your crash helmet and rent a Hummer.

Bloody hell thats a lot! Suppose in Yank land they do have much wider roads and intersections so you could creep through if you know where you are looking.

Is it still legal to make a right turn on a red-light (except where posted)?

So why the title "Scared to leave the house"?,

What does that have to do with a red light camera?

"1200 red light violations have been recorded at those seven sites" I would be looking left and right even if the light is green for me to go. Otherwise you will get a Dodge Ram in your eye!

Yes it is, I was there a couple of weeks ago and can really understand the logic behind it, it cuts down unnecessary waits at lights - makes alot of sense IMO.

Still legal to make a right on right in most states unless signed not to. As for yanks blasting through red lights its a very, very common practice (least here in SD & LA). Thing you have to remember the streets are much wider, smoother and tend to have limits of 45mph - 55mph. Of course everyone ignores the limits and romps along at 60-80mph in a built up area, amber lights are held for a relatively long time and more often that not they floor it to make it through no matter how far away. Many cross the "start line" as the light goes red or just after.

Me being Mr.Sensible UK driver slows then stops for amber often to the annoyance of over caffeinated hockey moms or jacked up F150 drivers.

So whats the difference?, you used to leave the house before the cameras were fitted, now you dont. Now the cameras are there it should start to get better, shouldnt it?

Perhaps its the way in which Americans think that confuses me scratchchin

Its nothing to do with the cameras. Just the statistic that so many people feel it is ok to jump reds, rather worrying!

More worrying is the amount of people that get shot over there, now that would scare the st out of me personally, yet they dont bat an eyelid.

I agree, we should adopt here obviously for left turns tho, really cuts down on trafic. Plus the greenies should love it as no cars are sat waiting with all their fumes killing fluffy kittens.

I'll add that a pedestrian has the right to cross (the road) over a car doing a right turn on red, in theorysmile

Running reds, female driver, baby seat, on the phone.... expect it.

But there are a lot of good female drivers, not my wife or her friends though.

Andrew,
Yes people do get shot, but generally I feel very safe and relaxed living here. During the day my doors are not locked, not everyone lives in LA.

I've no doubt you do feel very safe, and no doubt I would too - maybe I should have qualified my +1 by saying my agreement was in comparison to the point of the thread. Whatever the rate of injury / death from people running red lights, it has to be less than the rate of gun related injuries / deaths?
Obviously these things have to be put into perspective, otherwise we'd never leave the house regardless of where we lived.

To be honest, right now, I'd love to live somewhere other than this rapidly deteriorating country.

No, that's the location of Hollywood.
Shootings are generally in bad places where one would not normally venture.
But if you have a preference for being stabbed.....oh never mind. Threads gone a bit OT.

you're being stupid...

He has now found out about said camera statistics and is shocked he has not already been smashed to bits by a big beast of a car! So doesn't want to leave in case such an incident occurred.

hehe I've never seen as many vehicular accidents in such a short space of time as I did in LA.
