I have an imported car that did not originally have a standard UK sized/shaped number plate, one has been put on, but has broken and really need replacing. The fixing point is not ideal. I want to put a bracket at the bottom of the bumper (with the a new factory spoiler underneath). If the number plate is standard size, it will block the air intake (already small). I understand that for an import you can fit plates which have the motorcycle sized font (smaller and therefore smaller plate). Is this correct? Also as I go to club shows and track days regularly, I would like a removeable plate which I can exchage for a plate with my forum id on in silver on black. Is industrial Velcro legally acceptable for fixing the plate?
If I but a new plate for my pre Sept. 01 car does it need to display the Postcode of the plate supplier?

Thanks

get the plates from fancy plates (do a google search) they will sell you anything you want with no postcodes etc

Have you been on the DVLA website..? I recently went on it to answer a question about number plates... It is quite useful...

However as the letters for car number plates have to be a certain style and font, using motorbike sizes (which IIRC can be smaller) will not be legal. I only know this for classic plates, because that is specifically what i was looking for, however if that rule stands for cars of 30 yrs old or more, i would imagine it stands today.

Display of Vehicle Registration Marks on Imported Vehicles
(which have a restricted space for a standard sized number plate)
Certain imported vehicles may be permitted to display number plates with smaller characters if:

The vehicle does not have European Community Whole Vehicle Type Approval

AND

The vehicle's construction/design cannot accomodate standard size number plates
Specifications for smaller sized plates (for certain imported vehicles)

Character Height 64mm

Character Width 44mm

Character Stroke 10mm

Space between characters 10mm

Does that help?

Thanks for that, yes it does help. The car has been SVA'd would that count as type approval? If the car did not have a registration plinth would that be a possible reason for car requiring a smaller plate?

Thanks

If you imported it from outside of the EU, then it shouldn't have an EEC type approval, which is why you'd have to go through Single Vehicle Approval.

I guess not if the model is _only_ available imported,
SVA - single vehicle type approval
WVTA Whole Vehicle Type Approval

All IMO that is
