I'm trying to improve the above by using decent (non supermarket) fuel and Millers additive, but I'm finding that fuel efficiency improves on the computer after I've had a quick blast. Anyone else had this and know what the reason might be?

How old is your car how many miles?
It could be that the injectors are not 100% working due to partial clogging so rather than a fine spray they drip that uses more fuel for the same performance and causes more black smoke.
These additives can unclog them thus restoreing them

2005 35,000 miles. My bet is that it's had average quality fuel most of its life, so lets hope this Millers can clean up the nozzles.

I filled the tank with Shell V power diesel, used most of it and then went back to regular Shell diesel - seemed to improve the economy by a couple of MPG cool
