Achievement points

Hi people

I am new to the world of Xbox 360 and was wondering what these achievement points actually are .
I keep having mesaages saying " X amount of achievement points " when completing a level or some task on my games but i have no idea what its all about .

Sorry to sound like an idiot but there is no mention in the instructions for the games or the console.

Doesn't really have much significance to anything. It's just really an indication of how well you are doing at certain games!
