Hi,

anyone fitted a cat bypass to an MR2 MK2 (in particular, the 3SFE engine) 2.0 NA?

I've got a 1990 'H' and the MOT people have advised I can legally bypass and pass the emissions (apparently anything up to 'K' plate?)

Toyota seemed to bring the cat in early (2 years early!rolleyes) to get ready for the legislation, and as I've been quoted upwards of £200 for the cat, bypass seems the way to go (and any extra power will be a bonus)

it should be non cat test up to 1992 for a UK car.

turbo's can get away without a cat up until 1995 (N Reg) as sw20 + 3s-gte dont exist on the database

I checked this with VOSA, if the car was manufactured after July 1995 even it if its not on the database it needs a cat. Mines a November 1995 rolleyes

Sprry to be harsh, but is it really worth it on a 3SFE? Might be better to spend the cash on braided lines, and pads.

It is worth it, i've done it, the car feels a lot more responsive and sounds meaty aswell now!

It's worth it if it's £200 for a new CAT (for some reason) or much much less to just stick a piece of pipe in there.

Does he need a new cat though? bit vague in the first post. If he needs a new cat, then get the bypass, however I would spend your 200 quid elsewhere if it is a performance upgrade, or sell the car and get a 3SGE.

Well the OP does say he's been quoted £200 for a new CAT... So I presume something has happened to he old one. Possibly it's casing has rusted away or the like...

Yup,

thats the situation, rust means its blowing around the cat so its new cat at £200+ or cat bypass for £60

Not a power thing, couldnt give a rats as we wont be keeping that much longer

Cars done us well (had it 10 years), but typical H reg red car, gone pink in a lot of places, laquer gone in one place and I cant be arsed to keep polishing/t cutting

Oooh.. I thought you were thinking about it as a performance upgrade. Go for it then.
