I am of to Edinburgh for the first time with my GF tomorrow. We have a great spot to stay in (Mecure near the Castle) and were wondering if those who know the place, whether there is a great place to eat which isn't pretentious or stupidly overpriced? Also, not food related but is there a 'Must do' whilst were there.

Thanks.

Not been for a few years (i.e. can't vouch for recent times) but the Grainstore on Victoria Street used to be a bit of a favourite of mine.

Also the Scotsman pub at the top of Victoria Street is good for a drink, live music and drink in the atmosphere.

You should also try and do an evening in and around the Grass Market - some lovely pubs there.

Monster Mash is a fab old skool style diner that doesn't do fancy grub, but it's always a winner. Mainly bangers and mash with a few other old favs thrown in.

Hadrian's Brasserie - 1 Princes Street - big old building with the clock tower has set menus at reasonable prices and food is good. its part of the balmoral hotel i think.

the olive branch bistro - 91 broughton street is good as well, about 4-5 min walk from princes street . www.theolivebranchscotland.co.uk
