Leak from rere diff X300 xj6
Discussion
Impossible to say from the picture IMO.
Is the 'diff noisy? If it is then it's worn and you may not be able to cure a leak with new seals.
It's obviously been leaking for a long time, so I'd suggest a pressure wash first. There's no way you're going to be able to tell where the leak is from unless the 'diff and cage are spotlessly clean and doing any dismantling with the working area that dirty is really asking for trouble.
One thing to check before you get involved in changing seals is the breather on the top of the 'diff casing. These have a crimped on aluminimum cap with a small air gap around it to allow for expansion of the air in the 'diff as it heats and cools. If the cap had become blocked with crap the 'diff will pressurise, maybe enough for oil to weep past the seals if they are already a bit worn. These caps can also wear away through vibration which allows the air gap to get too big and oil will be flung out.The only real way to tell is to change the breather cap. About a tenner so it's worth a try.
Clean up the 'diff, change the oil and see what happens. If it's done a lot of miles and is getting noisy then frankly I'd not bother investigating too far. Fill it up with somthing like Penrite EP 85/140 GL5 instead of EP 90. The 85/140 oil is not to the required spec. but it works a treat both in reducing noise and slowing down leak rates.

I'd put a diff pinion seal in it if your really bothered. I used to do loads of then on 300's
But to be honest that's not a major leak and I'd live with it. Especially as if you over tighten the pinion flange nut, when you do the seal, you will wipe out the bearing in the diff in no time.
