...does anybody know, or has it already happened? I'm after a Specialized Rockhopper Disc, currently reduced at every retailed I have visited from £599 to £499. Will it drop again when the 09 stock comes in?

Secondly, I weigh in at around 17st and my riding style is quite aggressive . How will the rockhopper stand up to punishment, as my last bike a Giant terrago was trashed within 6 months.

The '09 specialized range are already on most websites, that is why the '08 models are reduced already. The danger of waiting any longer is retailers will have sold most of the common sizes, so unless you want a 13" frame, it's probably not worth waiting! You may be lucky and find it reduced further, but it's unlikely, as it's a popular model and the 09 spec is worse for the money.

As for the rockhopper being strong enough, I would've thought it was a bit stronger than the giant, but what was it that failed before? Things like wheels on all XC models aren't going to take too much heavy abuse, you'd need downhill or jump specific stuff for that, but they're going to weigh twice as much!

If it was the frame, well it has a warranty, so as long as you're not abusing it, it should be covered. And if it's controls (cranks/pedals, handlebars/stem etc), then again, you might need to upgrade to DH stuff.

Kona are supposed to be good for "the larger gent", I'm sure MBR or WhatMB did a review of some tougher bikes a few months ago.

Righto, I'm in the largest frame size so I suppose I need to make a decision.

BB broke and was a nightmare to remove, screw thread snapped off inside one of the fork legs so I couldn't service the suspension. New wheel set from the first week as the standard were bent and hubs broken.
I basically couldn't afford the right gear for the task.

Ha ha, 'larger gent', very diplomatic. I didn't get on with the Kona frame they had at the LBS as it was only a 17inch frame.

The Specialized centre near me have knocked about 10% off 08 bikes as of last weekend.

I looked at a Marin on Sunday with nearly 30% off!

True, I haven't managed to find the link to some young strumpet with a great set of disk brakes.

I'm tall (6ft 3) and heavy (19 stone) and have had no problems with my GT, which I ride pretty hard and have had for four years now. I tried riding a couple of Specializeds and absolutely hated the frame geometry. It felt like I was about to pitch over the handlebars all the time. Could have been fixed with a longer stem I suppose, but in standard spec it was scary.

Similar sized friend of mine (albeit slightly lighter) didn't like the Specialized either and went with a GT too.
