Price Difference - Dealer buy to sell
Discussion
I've been looking with interest at the thoughts on affordability on a Gallardo. Have also been looking at finance deals, PCP etc, and come to the conclusion that this is well within reach. Yippee.
So, onto the next question - what is the general experience of the difference in prices being offered by a dealer for PX / buy (if any are buying!), against the forecourt prices being advertised? A touch of a "how long is a piece of string" question, I grant you - but anyone with any direct or indirect recent experience and/or exmaples?
Would I be correct in assuming that it's a good time to haggle with a dealer?
Cheers, Bradders

Thanks for the reply Jules.
I was beginning to think I'd committed a forum no-no asking such a question! Quite a delicate subject matter, money. I can see how people might not want to say, especially if they have cars advertised on here.
This has come a little early for me - having work done which includes raising and re-building the garage, which is not due to be completed until early next year. BUT, I seem to have got my teeth into it somewhat, and the nagging urge to buy will not go away!
Taking the other half to see a Gallardo this afternoon, all being well - don't need the approval, but it's always nice to have confirmation. An 07 in black, with black leather E-gear.
Cheers, Mark

Hmm, buying the car of your dreams can, it seems, prove to be more difficult than I thought!
Turn up at the dealership to view the car, advertised on Autotrader - nobody approaches - wander round, can't see it anywhere. Wander round some more, still nobody approaches, so eventually go up to the reception desk...
"I've come to discuss and look at the Gallardo you have advertised on Autotrader". Met with a scornful look, and a quick call to "Justin" who "has all the details". Justin eventually arrives, nods hello, and walks straight past, into a back room. Comes out, and looks around, then eventually comes over - "Is it you...." looking me up and down with what appears to be disdain.
Ask him if I can see the car, and he explains that it's up fo sale on behalf of someone else - and not at the dealership. OK, I can take that. I explain I have not yet driven one, but passengered in one a couple or so years ago. Again, I sense disdain. Ask him if we can discuss the deal - p/x my RS4 as a deposit, and that I will look at PCP, or maybe even outright purchase. G/F who is with me, spots disdain.
Give my RS4 details, and he follows me outside to look at it - asks whether the RS4 is on finance - no, I reply - more disdain sensed. Show him the RS4, point out a small dent, to which he says he's not interested in that at the moment. Leave my mobile - he will call me on Monday.
What to make of it all? Well, to be honest, it's left me somewhat cold. Why do I think he showed himself in this way - I was in jeans, trainers and a t-shirt.
Hmm, and I thought there was a recession looming! Let's just hope he calls back on Monday. This from a well known main dealer selling uber-rep "wagen's".
Hmm!!

Go elsewhere - Justin sounds like a nob. They should be falling over themselves to be nice to you
Seconded. You'd imagine the current market would put an end to characters like the one you describe. There are plenty of cars out there at the moment at the right price and with the right level of service attached. Go elsewhere, simple.
Enjoy your search!
Was this a main dealer (sounds like it wasn't) or one of these corner plot 'super cars innit' dealers? Maybe the Gallardo wasn't for sale anymore or if it was it was on SOR with a low margin. Therefore the dealer would have no interest in taking your RS4, but couldn't admit that.
ps it found it always helps to ring before travelling, typically a car has been sold, lent out, not there, borrowed by sales man etc quite often.

Interesting points SJN - yeah, I guess it could be as you describe, but would it not make it much more simple to actually say so? A simple sorry sir, but we cannot accept a part ex based on the deal etc would have stopped me feeling like I should not have gone in to find out.
I was actually passing the dealership, so no great shakes about ringing first. In fact I was not too bothered it wasn't there - as per original post. What puzzled me more was the lack of interest in a customer. The more I think about it, I get the impression that we were almost ushered out. If I get the call today, then all is well - otherwise a call to the dealer principal will follow shortly afterwards. The have someone write my mobile number down on a scrap of paper, and not even offer a business card in return is somewhat surprising to me.
Big Hair - yes, this was a main dealer. A very large and well known dealer in the city (Leeds). I'm not sure naming and shaming will allow me to mention who it is - PM me, and I will reply with the details. I am guessing that they don't normally deal in such exotica but are recognised as representing a higher end manufacurer of mainstream cars.
Will be back later today with the outcome.

OK, dealer sounds like a cocktard. Avoid him in future. The car was either fictitious, or on sale or return in which case you have to wonder whether he can't afford his stock. Also, you tend to find that some (not all) dealers think that because they sell Lambos, they think they deserve one, like the catty women in Prada who have to buy their own clothes in Primark. It stings them to see people who've done better than them.ps it found it always helps to ring before travelling, typically a car has been sold, lent out, not there, borrowed by sales man etc quite often.

If you're looking at metal like this, it might help if you do the following (all well meant advice.... learned the hard way.....)
1. Call and make an appointment first, to see a specific make and model, even better a specific car
2. Follow up with a work email confirming.
3. Give them a land line number as well as a mobile.
In my general experience, dealers do get a lot of people who go for a day out looking at cars they can't afford. In your case, you can, so you need to differentiate yourself from the lookers.
Good luck, you jammy git!

Interesting comments about apparent lack of dealer interest. I had a similar experience recently when looking to p/x my turbo against a V8 Vantage, paying the difference. Dealer was not interested in doing any kind of deal, when you'd have thought in the current climate they'd be keen. It was a hassle even to get an appointment for a test drive - and they made me feel like I was lucky they were even letting me be there. Annoyed me to such an extent that I'm going to keep my car for now. I'd been wavering between a V8 and a Gallardo anyway, so I guess it gives me some more time to decide which to get!

Hurrah! Dealer did call - maybe I misread the salesman's signals - then again....!
So, now they've verified I do exist, the details of my RS4, that I work where I say I do etc.
Next step will be to see how long it takes for someone to get back to me with some options for purchase.
Ta for all the replies. Cheers, Mark

Verification of email address as a point of contact - work?
They phoned again later in the afternoon to say there was a delay getting pricing on the RS4, so I guess there is something going on now.
Car is actually over in Manchester, so a trip across the hills for me later in the week, I guess.

surely the op doesnt need to "prove" himself any further than simply parking the RS4 outside? Obviously it could be someone elses but the RS4 is as good an indicator as any that the guy is serious about cars?
I dont know but in the current climate I would be expecting dealers to be pulling out the stops. Sadly we all seem to have been met by dealers who dont give a toss. I wonder how long it'll take before they do start to take note?
