C55 and/or E55AMG
Discussion
I think the E55`s are fantastic, had my 7 seater estate for around 5 months and 10,000 miles. I got mine (2003 with 24k miles) from a merc garage with 1 years warrenty and purchased 2 additional years (upto 100k miles) for £1700.
So far its all been good and costs have been reasonable considering the preformance. Back tyres dont last long and I budget for a pair every 6k miles at around £180 a pair. Fuel consumption has averaged 19.4 mpg acoring to the computer. I`ve had one `c` sevice and that cost around £390 and the assyst pluss tells me it needs servicing again (another `c` service in 9000 miles.
I`m about to replace the dicks and pads at the front as I got a set of disks cheap and decided to go for red stuff uprated pads and total cost was around £340.
Under warrenty I have had quite a few software issues sorted, a new intercooler pump, a new head light unit and a heater dual valve (the heater would only blow ice cold) and I think it would have cost around £2k so far if I had to pay......
Preformance wise not a lot can touch you in a straight line and have embared a new Gallardo, a new XK `R` and more porsches than I care to mention.....

I've got (and am selling) a C55 and it's s simply brilliant car.
It is a very good motorway cruiser and when you want to have some fun you've got plenty of power on tap. The handling is great and the reason I prefer the C55 is the size as for me the E55 was just too big. I would definitely recommend one.
If you fancy having a look at mine let me know (it's in the classifieds and is currently the cheapest one on the market)!

JMN - just wondered if you'd got any insurance quotes for C55 vs E55 - for some strange reason that I don't fully understand, the E55 was £100 cheaper than the C55 (assuming both were 2004 models) using the autotrader insurance quotes system when I checked. Both very nice cars, but on performance the E55 is a significant step up from C55. Worth checking also dealer vs private prices; across all models it often seems the case that private sellers are sometimes less in tune with the market, and are asking more than main dealers for similar specification and age cars. Both cars will continue to depreciate heavily, so negotiate hard!
Worth checking specification as well - all C55s seemed well specified (COMAND etc), but some E55s can be more basic.
IMHO the E55 is the best value performance saloon available at the moment; I'm currently looking for one!

I have recently acquired a C55 AMG with M1/M2 gear programme, paddle shift, lsd, and composite brakes with carbon airbox fitted at Affalterbach by AMG and I am really impressed. Having previously owned S4, TVR, M3CSL and various other performance cars I cannot complement this motor enough. Excellent dynamics, handling, performance, comfort load lugging ability etc.
Only down size is the fuel consumption when pressed hard, but everything has its price. Buy one!
