I have read that the screen size is all to do with the viewing distance.
I also read that in the sizes below 37", or whatever size it is, that the extra money for 1080i is not worth it.
In my apartment, away from home, which has a smaller lounge than "home" I am looking for a replacement TV.
I have a 32" ordinary TV, and the screen looks smallish.
I know, or think I know, bigger than 40" will be too dominant.
From the seating area to the wall is 4 meters.
Suggestions please.

Its hard to visualize it in your own place I think. I bought a 37" lcd a year ago to replace the 32" standard tv and it looks huge in my flat. I am glad I didn't go for the 42".

not much use but i brought a Sony 42" a few weeks ago, through a sony centre and got quite a saving by being advised to ring around a few and play one against the other, their web prices are well out of touch for what they actually sell for

well happy with the quality of the picture, though it all depends on what signal you have going into it

Got a 52" full hd Samsung (for an incredible price, would never have bought one at list) and am extremely happy with it. We have a couple of similar smaller ones at work, and I can also recommend those - normal TV works fine, and image quality is flawless from all inputs.

I can also use mine as a 52" 1920x1080 monitor for my laptop smile

We got a very nice 37" Panasonic Viera Plasma a few days ago. Has loads of inputs, fantastic picture and sound quality and seems to be a very nice all round size like not too small yet not too big. Cost £589 but it can be had for less if you shop arround.

Unbeatable if you're mainly watching analogue or freeview TV.

This is the one you want....

http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/Sony-KDL40W4000/

I bought one the other week from electricaldirect or something (pm me for info) for £798 + £100 for a 5 yr warranty.

Awesome TV, superb quality, sound and perfect for a PS3. One of the best LCDs available if not the best.

Is our very own Derestrictor.

I would say a Panny is the way forward, but speak to the great man himself.

Superb prices and service.

I wouldn't get too hung up on the size of the picture. For example I have a 65" HD rear projection in my flat that I sit about 5m away from. Due to the lay out it doesn't dominate the room and has a fantastic picture. Its amazing how quickly you get used to the size of tv that is in front of you. Even my mother who hates TVs generally loves this one.

The main thing is to mount the TV in a good position. My dad used to have a business installing audio and video stuff and the number of times people would ask for the screen to mounted at the same height as a picture was amazing even after we recomended they did not.

40 inch tvs look pretty tiny nowadays. If your 32 is looking small why don't you go to the balls and get a 47? Quite a lot of difference and you get used to it very quickly. I've got a 47 I sit about 3 metres from and thats fine for tv althoug IMO a bit small for films.
I wouldn't rule a big un out outright, big tvs are much better for watching than small!

I went for a 42 inch Philips, with surround sound by Philips also.

Paid £600 for it last year.

Only looks too big for about 5 days, then you adjust and all is well.

Have a look at Richer sounds (no, im not affiliated to them)

Cheap, and good service

Get the biggest telly you can, and it will soon look like it has always been there

You can get a much bigger TV from a 4 meter seating distance.

I have a 32" LCD TV for regular TV viewing. But for movies and video gaming I use a top of the range BenQ 720p projector. In my living room (which isn't that big). I project onto a 77" screen. I sit approx 3 meters from the screen. I've got to say, it looks fantastic. HD movies are stunning.

Now my projector is HD Ready, not the Full HD that's going around now (1080p). I will upgrade one day...

Anyway, all I am saying is at 4 meters you can get a very large TV and have no problems with the lowest available HD resolution.

I think basically, HD on a 40" screen is hardly worth it... it's the bigger screens that really show the benefit (and detail).

Cheers

What about the Toshiba one with the slim bezel - screen size of a 40" but smaller than a normal 37" box.

Stick with Panasonic at 37 or 42. Also you'll get a Free 5 year warranty from independent dealers.
PX80 is HD ready

PZ80 is Full HD but from 42" upwards in plasma but from 32" in LCD
