I just made a pilgrimage from Deepest Darn Sarf to Newcasselby using the A1.

I can report that the folks in Yorkshire

a) never drive faster than a lorry.

b) have *no* idea about lane discipline. Almost
entirely populated by drivers that inhabit the right lane
of their tiny little main roads ( two lanes - pah !)

Eight sodding hours it took me to make a 300 mile
journey.

I won't be doing that again. Newcassel & all points
in between won't be getting the benefit of my tourist
pounds until they sort our their roads & their drivers
(about year 2020 I think).

Rant over. We return you now to the loading zone
announcements ...

Matron !

You can have your B roads. I don't want them,
not even those Yorkshire motorways only seven
feet wide with grass growing up the middle.

I think it's a standard bit of GCSE Geography
that "how economically developed an area is" is strongly correlated to the quality & density of the road infrastructure in that area.

Heaven help any companies relocating to Yorkshire.
In my view.

Yorkshire: great roads, shame about the drivers... I remember getting very practised at finding sightlines to "un-blind" blind bends to get some chances to overtake. It was that or never get over 40mph.

Ah yes, the 40mph Driver.
Formerly known as the Sunday Driver, but as they drive so slowly, they've found that they have to set off up to a week earlier, so you'll find the roads littered with 'Sunday' drivers every day of the week.
That's my theory anyway.

Five hours on the way up, and four and a half on the way back.

Much better, almost reasonable in fact.

All they still need to learn is lane discipline and to not drive like women.

Followed a pale green XJ8 for twenty miles without it one moving out of what is laughing known as the "fast lane". Some of us want to get home faster than 65 mph, chum.

Also followed a pristine XK8 (155 mph car ?) doing a solid 32 mph for ten miles down a B road west of Leyburn.

Also suggest that lorries be restricted to lane 1. The Germans have this, and it works well. Far too many lorries taking 3-4 miles to overtake their fellow lorries leading to very long tailbacks.

Well I have to take your point. The driving of people on the south of this country is far beter. I used to enjoy the fact that getting home without someone hitting my front wing 'cos they were too busy worrying about getting 3 yrds further down a line of slow moving traffic was a bonus. Or it taking me nearly 3 hours to drive from Docklands to Maidstone on at least 6 occasions over a 2 month period. And the courtousy extended to our fellow man knows no bounds south of the Watford Gap.

All in all. Enjoy the south. We will continue to enjoy the North.
