From Goodwood Revival website..

"The first registration number plate to be issued in Edinburgh – ‘S1’ – was sold today (19 September 2008) by Bonhams for a staggering £397,500.

Following a lengthy bidding battle between several people on the telephone, a buyer in the room eventually secured the registration number to a round of applause. The successful buyer from the company Bold Registrations, said: “I believe that number plates in general are a good investment, even at this price. The registration number will remain in the UK and will be going onto an old red Skoda, which will be seen around The Midlands.”confused

Surprised about the Skoda, but not the staying in the UK, pretty worthless anywhere else.

Depends on how old a Skoda it is. They can trace their history back over 100 years and before the commies got hold of them, they were a luxury coach builder.

I think its unfair to say how he should spend his money when people are spending over £100 million on art and lots of money on cars etc.

I agree its a lot of money but its an amazing plate - don't think he needs locking up in jail!! smile
What makes it "amazing"?

I don't understand.

I didn't suggest spending millions on "art" was any better. I do suggest paying any more that £500 for a plate is madness. If I was a dictator I'd close the DVLA tomorrow for gross racketeering.
If the plate's likely to at least keep its value then whats the problem? If they've got the money then why not? Subtlety's cool
