Advice on Defender purchase
Discussion
Hi all,
I am looking to pick up a Defender 90 (County or XS if poss and a 110 if need be) and have a budget of £10k. I had been thinking closer to 7k but at that price I can't seem to find anything that is in decent nick with sensible miles.
I am no expert on these cars (as you might guess) and am really just looking for something to use as a daily run around up here in the Highlands - something to head off in to the hills in with the dog in the back even when it is snowing etc. I have looked at lots of other 4x4s but it’s a Defender I want really, partly because I like the way they drive and yes partly because they look the business.
Luxury is not important (obviously) but reliability and good value are.
Where is the best place to look or do I need to revise my budget / requirements?
All advice welcome.

I would look for a really good one registered before March 2001, unless it has no side windows, ie commercial derivative. Be aware that the budget VED changes are retrospective, and as things stand you will be paying £440 from next year to tax a Defender TD 5 station wagon, ie XS/County Spec with windows if it was registered after 1 March 2001. This is due to the CO2 emission of 280 g/km for a TD5.
There are some about, with abs and air con but you will have to look hard.
I really liked my defender, especially the fact that you could almost fix anything on it yourself, but it is not the best vehicle for commuting or regular long journeys
