Any Linux boffins here?

Having bother with Mandrake 9.1.

I can boot to a login prompt and login as root or user without problem. If I log in as root, I can then logout and in as the user. If, however, I then logout and log back on as root it won't accept the password.

And if I log on as the user, if I try to use SU, it refuses the password.

Going round and round in circles here and it's driving me mad!!

Anyone able to shed some light?

Have you tried "su root" or just "su"! with the password?

Thought; You are aware that everything in Linux is case sensitive, aren't you?
