Hope to make both days of the Nationals as the W*****r looks like it may hold.
I think this may represent some good opportunities for night Fuel and other racing.
Ive never shot this stuff in the dark before, any pointers ?
Using a Nikon D70S and Siggy 70-300 with only the built in flash.
Happy to stand as close as necessary.
Would normally use dynamic or centre weighted AF, shutter priority and 1/300 -1/500 ish with ISO as whatever the camera wants.
Appreciate any pointers, always trying to take a better pic.
This is my normal stuff......all straight form the camera, no PP.

Hi Mark !
I am no expert on digital pix despite having bought & used some equipment,
but I doubt you would get good pictures from the banking (?) with the built-in flash.
Check the manual how far it will throw a decent light,
and watch out for the fastest speed it synchronizes with,
on my 40D with extra flash it is a250th of a second.
If you use a faster shutter speed, only a part of the pic will be "lit".
Maybe a -new or used- external flash can be obtained ?
You should get something in the 50-100quid range.
However, I stand to be corrected by the folks you mentioned in the thread title.
Cheers,
Benni
P.S.: in the Joon pic, you managed to get a nice snap of ScoobySuze......

Shooting action pictures in poor light can be a seriously difficult task!....on my 40D with extra flash it is a250th of a second.

As Benni says, Mark, the built-in flash is ineffective at anything more than a few feet away and, with using the 70-300 lens you are likely to get a semi-circular sort of "moon shadow" across any picture, as well. Benni's advise to get a decent (second hand will do nicely) top-mounted flash will greatly extend your shooting distance.
There are dozens of other considerations, but perhaps the best thing to do is to use and experiment with some manual settings. For example (and these can vary wildly from situation to situation!) set your aperture to make the most of that lens and try set it to f4. Try and get away with a 250th shutter setting (you will need to pan your shots carefully) and start off with an ISO setting of 800. Just keep trying and once you start getting passable pictures, make a note of the settings for future use!
Hope you get on okay.
Cheers,
PS:-
I meant to say leave the focussing on automatic - however, as it gets really dark, you'll find most autofocus systems throw the towel in and that's when you need to go one-shot and focus on a particular point on the track - though I guess you'd know this. Cheers.

This is an OK picture, but what ruins it is the 0.81 60 foot time
EFA.
One other small but possibly picky point for me to pick up on is the fact that Lex's 60 foot time on that run wasn't actually 0.81 seconds (believe me, there would have been Dutch flags all over Santa Pod and in every spectator's hand, if it was!!) it was actually 0.8702 seconds which, is a damn site stouter than my old T5 could manage...!

Whilst we are doing picky, Rich, your shot and Marks are about 12 months apart...
Well, that serves me right for trying to be helpful, trying to get my facts right, trying to get the spelling right and then making a stupid assumption of when the shot was taken. Had I tried to look a little harder at Lex's bodywork, my flawed post would have been realised and my deep embarrassment avoided....However, thanks to your quoting of my buffoonish post, my status as a complete and utter nincompoop is now confirmed forever.... Some pal you are! Lol!
