I'm 21 years of age and for someone my age have a reasonably good job. I work within the Emergency Services sector (having worked in two services over a period of 3 years).

I never really bothered with higher education as I felt life experience would be best for me. This has paid off as I now find myself at the brink of reaching my goal and achieving my dream - I've applied for the role I've always wanted, I've passed my tests and now all I have left is my fitness and medical tests which is taking place on this Friday no less.

Anyway I swear blind that my eyesight is going to let me down and that my dream will be left in tatters! A wise man once said 'change what you can't accept, but accept what you can't change'. If the worst happens that will be very sound advice for me to adhere to.

I'm not one to sit back on my laurels however and as an ambitious individual, I will want to continue on working to reach higher goals and to achieve a higher wage (boys and girls money means a lot in life!). I can't afford to take a pay cut (around 21k per annum) but what can I do to achieve a higher rate of pay and to achieve more from life?

Can I study? Is it going to be expensive? What's best to study? With what i've already achieved are there any other services to look at? RAF - anyone ever been in, whats the eysight standards like?

I wouldn't mind having an extra career/role on the side - lots of shift work so plenty of spare time - what would be worthwhile looking at doing?

All thoughts and ideas are much appreciated.

If money is your motivation then you are trying to reach a goal that cannot be achieved. If you want to have enough money to buy some toys but would ultimately prefer job satisfaction to material pleasure then try something in the medical profession or teaching. Or maybe go into business yourself, it sounds like you have it in you.

Always nice to see someone young with a bit of drive but there is more to life than money. Without sounding bad, it's a shame it can't buy wisdom.

It does sound like you are being underpaid, i used to get more than 21k for being a station assistant. Thankless job; don't bother.

Get them lazered, I did and now my eyesight is better than 20/20. Well worth doing if a bit expensive.

1. You don't tell us what your dreams are, so it's bl**dy hard to advise you on how to achieve them
2. You mention that you only have one dream and you're about to achieve it. I sincerely hope not, or you'll have 60 years of boredom ahead of you. Best find some more. wink
3. As mentioned, get your eyes mauled by some frickin' layzer beams if it helps
4. Money only seems like it'll fix everything until you have it. Then you realise you wasted a lot of time getting it (assuming you don't win the lottery) when you could have just been happy and content with something more fulfilling. It's a b*gger either way.
5. Stuff on the side is as per (1)... what do you enjoy? Can turn lots of hobbies into something income generating if it's money that you think makes you happy.

the more money you earn, the more money you spend. It's a never ending cycle. Nothing wrong with ambition, just don't base everything on money. You will never earn enough, as your idea of enough, changes when you have more.

I have nowt, always had nowt, and will proberley finish with nowt, but I enjoy my job, live within my means and I enjoy my lot. Could I do with more money, yes, do I want to spend every waking hour working, No.

Thanks to all for their responses thus far.

A brief update to fill in on the gaps I missed out, late last night - my excuse? I was tired... wink

Laser eye surgery - the implications that might arise in years to come worries me, allegedly a slight turn in my eye and my age will prevent me from having the surgery!

Money - you're right it isn't everything. However I'd like to earn a little more so I can a) save more b) have a few toys) c) get on the property ladder and d) treat myself/family/friends more.

Job Satisfaction - I think thats the 'nail on head' point right there! I want to be happy with what I'm doing and feel as if I'm making a difference.

Education - I think the only way to go up the ladder is to further my education, but where do I start? Open Uni degree a good idea? Is it expensive?

Business - I'd love to start my own. My main hobbies are fitness related (cycling, running etc.), photography, travelling and anything autmotive/car related. Where do you start?

Any ideas, suggestions and comments are appreciated.
