Taxpayers to pick up the bill for people who want to go to the theatre but don't want to buy a ticket.

Surely this isn't the purpose of the state.

To be honest of all the harebrained ideas they have come up I like this one the best, at least normal people can get something back from the state.
Sadly I am a year out, but it means I can go with my GF and pay half price.
Look at it this way, I've worked all my life (except education, also paid for private school by parents, uni by me) paid taxes and never claimed a single state benefit (even NHS gets barely used by me, never actually been to hospital for myself).
What have I received back for my taxes? Speeding tickets, more tax, increased parking charges and er that's it.
Anyway come on how many "yoofs" are going to take this offer up? It might actually encourage a bit of appreciation for the arts among those who want to learn (like me) which is probably the opposite effect that the government is looking for, I'm sure they want the theatre full of dole scroungers. That said sure there will be some caveat to stop us from enjoying the offer, no doubt unless your a card holding communist, smoking a joint, dragging along 15 illegitimate kids and your dole card you won't be admitted.
Jaundiced moi?

The scheme follows recommendations made in a recent government review about engaging young people.
Not trying to buy more votes are they? wildoliver said:

Let me suggest a better system. You pay less tax, therefore have more money and can buy tickets if you wish. If this is the best the government can come up with the money should have stayed in your pocket and never gone to the treasury in the first place.
"Government is committed to increasing access to the arts for everyone
."
Oh goody so I might actually get something back from the government after paying my taxes all these years as a full time employed, single white male in his 20s! Finally Gordon's considering ME!!!
Oh wait, I'm 2 years too old

Not trying to buy more votes are they? Bah. Feel our pain.
Saw this on the news this morning, the one bit that got me was the interviews with the yoof on the street.
Interviewer: Would you go to see a play?
Yoof 1: Nah
Interviewer:What if it was free?
Yoof 1: I might, depends what was on
Interviewer: How about Shakespeare?
Yoof 1: Yeah, I'm well into Shakespeare
Interviewer: Would you go to see a play?
Yoof 2: Nah
Interviewer:What if it was free?
Yoof 2: Maybe
Interviewer: How about Shakespeare?
Yoof 2: Yeah, Shakespeare is well cool
Well, it surprised me anyway!

Quibbling about £2.5 million is scrabbling over pennies really. Why get yourselves worked up like this when there are untold BILLIONS being sent up in smoke.
Because pissing money away on half-baked ideas that give arguably zero benefits to anyone is never a good thing. It's the governments complete disregard for the value of money and culture of throwing cash at things without engaging braincells first which peeves* me off.(*well not that much in real life, just enough to write a post about it on the internet)

What annoys me most is the fact they are described as free tickets. They are not free, they are being paid for by the taxpayer.
You mean like free computers for kids or free broadband?
My god I think I may just explode with hatred of our government.
