Paris '08: Audi S4

New S4 gets a supercharged V6

Audi is wheeling out a new engine for its ‘S’ line-up – a 3.0-litre supercharged TFSI V6 which will sit in the nose of the new S4. The supercharger is understood to use a couple of four vane rotors and sits in the valley of the engine block.

The air is fed through a pair of intercoolers to the combustion chambers where a direct injection system provides the fuel. The S4 saloon and Avant will have 330bhp and 325lb ft of torque fed through either a six-speed manual gearbox or a new seven-speed S-Tronic dual clutch transmission.

0-60mph takes 5.1 seconds and top speed is limited to 155mph. The S4’s quattro system channels 40% of the torque to the front axle and 60% to the rear.

The car will debut at the Paris Motor Show next week.

Is that power and torque less than the previous S4??

To be honest if it is, its a price I (and others I suspect) may be willing to pay if the fuel economy is much improved and the car is lighter.

An interesting move back to forced induction V6. I think we'll see more of this as emissions regulations and public demand begin to change.

That said, I much prefer the sound of a V8 over the sound of a V6.

Torque is up - peak PS down. I think drivability is the key, and real world performance will be improved along with mpg & Co2 output. Everybody is going forced induction, and smaller displacement.

But those other two are drivetrains setup for wafting and economy, not thrashing around the backroads... listening to a glorious supercharged V6 petrol soundtrack... biggrin

I'm hoping Audi have kinda realised speed isn't everything and made a car that is just good fun to hoon around in, while also being pretty efficient and still pretty nippy smile

Awesome now I'll be able to look at my S4 V8 and in a Mad Max style say "Last of the V8's"

I thought the RS6 was a replacement for the RS4, didn't they say they were only going to have one 'RS' model at any one time?

Yeah i totally agree but how many will actually ever be trashed on a back road? Just think if its going to have a S badge should be a little bit special..I suppose this is probably the start of the end of the power wars..if that makes any sense..not many people 330bhp isn't enough for in a saloon car.
Just can't imagine your average executive picking this over the diesel when its nearly as quick, way more frugal and cheaper to tax etc and cheaper..so that leaves petrol heads..so would you buy this over an M3 or would you be waiting for the new RS4 or the IS-f?

Audi could build a 1 litre bio-diesel V8 and stick it in a Polo, the greenies would still hate it cos it says V8. It's just blind hate and envy.

I'd rather have a used RS4 over this.
