Where to eat/drink in New York
Discussion
Ok its not Haut Cuisine but I absolutely loved http://www.ellensstardustdiner.com/ when I visited. Great atmosphere and the talent of the staff is something (all drama/broadway students). Bog standard american diner food but theres nothing wrong with that

This is the topic I've been waiting for!!
I've been over here 5 months and have eaten at a number of places. You are really spoilt for choice - as others have said.
It depends on what kind of food you want, what sort of budget, etc.. If you are trying to make a big impression then look up Maze at the London Hotel. It works out of the same kitchen as Gordon Ramsay's fine dining restaurant but at a much lower price.
If you are after steaks, then Wolfgangs on 33rd and Park Ave is great. Also try Keanes steakhouse which is nearer Penn St. If you can get a table, Peter Lugers in Brooklyn is the renowned as the best Steak House in NY.
Gramercy Tavern as mentioned above gets great reviews but I havent managed to visit it yet.
JG Melon on the Upper East Side has the best Burger I have had so far.
Still havent found a good Chinese or Curry House - but admittedly I havent ventured into Chinatown yet.
I have a Zagat's guide on my desk at all times, so if you are after a review let me know and I'll happily look it up for you!

Depends what you want to eat, I grew up here. Suggest you try some local landmarks..
Pizza? Rosa's over in Maspeth Queens (69th, close to Grand ave) is excellent, but their Sicilian is second to none. But it's quite a bit out of the way, was allegedly John Gotti's favorite Pizzeria.
John's Pizza on Bleecker St in the West Village is also one of the best in the city, more of a Brick Oven style.
But you could spend hours debating Pizza shops in the city...
Kosher Deli? Katz's on Houston. Tip the people making your sandwich, trust me. Get the Hot Pastrami, possibly the biggest sandwich you have ever seen.
Steakhouses? God, this is Steak heaven! Peter Luger's is overrated. The Palm and the Palm Too are fantastic, so is Smith and Wollensky.
Americans do Indian Food like Brits do Mexican, there's some good places but they are not common.
NYC has some flat-out fantastic Italian places too. Check out Little Italy, Mulberry Street. Umberto's is famous, Cafe Napoli is also outstanding and I personally vouch for it HIGHLY.
A lot of it depends on what kind of food you are looking for and what kind of ambience. You might want to grab a copy of the Zagat Survey at the airport when you land.
Too bad you'll be here too late to catch a Yankees Game! If you need some local advice, let me know.
