What an idiot I have been tonight. Checked coolant level before going for a drive & had to pull over after 10 minutes because of burning smell...
Yup, the expansion tank cap melted onto the exhaust manifold. God, what a smell!
So I rang The Garage (this was at 6.40pm) and DB is still there! Leaves me out a new cap and I pop up there to collect.
Sorted, no drama and thankfully no fire.

Thanks, Dave!

You are not alone in placing the cap there when checking the level, it is the obvious place. Did the same on mine but with the oil filler cap as have others. Makes a surprising amount of smoke doesn’t it.

Did my VW/Audi cap a few months back too, also left on the manifold. Also done the oil filler on ANdrea's around the same time - fortunately it dropped off with a big ding on a dual carraigeway, which Andrea wasn't chuffed about as in was in the middle of the road on the opposite carraigeway and she had to climb over the armco.

Senility creaping in here chaps eh. I know that feeling hehe

Perhaps you should let Andrea do the daily maintenance checks Paul. She's obviously the technically minded/less senile of the two of you biggrin
