Afternoon

I'm thinking the time has come to make an honest woman out of her and, being as she sometimes looks on here, am posting anonymously.

I'm sure there'll be a lot of replies along the don't do it lines, etc but what I'm really after is a straw poll of the following:

1. Talk to her Dad first to let him know my intentions?

This seems a little cheesy but also quite respectful. He's a good old boy and we get on well but is it too old-fashioned?

2. Would you consider the ring to be a pre-requisite at the proposal itself?

Don't want to balls up on sizing really, so am thinking take her to get one if/when she says yes?

I would ask real-life people wink but I want as few people to know as possible before the event itself.

1. Don't do it!

If you really must then:

2. Yes, get ring first, but try and find out what she likes

3. Propose first, then talk to Father before announcing.

I reckon ask the dad (he'll probably be pleased, and it may well get you a free pint biggrin) and no ring necessary at proposal.. but what do I know? hehe

Ask her dad first, then ask your gran if she happens to have her mothers engagement ring lying around.

Seriously, be a tt untill she hates you with every fibre of her being, and then give her your house and everything else you own.

It'll be quicker and less painful.

My sister had been with OH 10 years - he is a real lad and we all thought he would never do the deed. He asked my dad first, then flew sis on surprise weekend to prague where he proposed with a token ring - the 5k jobbie did need her input as she is one fussy lady. She loved the fact he had been old fashioned.

I was told deffo DONT buy a ring. The reason? if she didnt like it, she would feel compelled to wear it as I chose it for her, even though she didnt like it. So I propsoed, then we bought the ring.

If you get on well with her dad, it would be a nice touch to ask him first, as long as you can trust him to keep schtum.
Good PR is that.

Get the ring first, then come to your senses, take it back and live normally enjoying the same things you do now.

You forgot the frontal lobotomy to change your personality, beyond recognition.

Doesnt really matter - mind getting down on one knee without a ring is odd.

Ring shops etc are fine with you changing rings its pretty normal - however if you do buy a ring then you have set a benchmark budget.

Oh - remember the engagement ring should cost 1 months gross salary. Dont skimp on that part, I think its really good to do this as firstly it shows you really really want it and have saved up to get it rather than those crappy sub £1.5k ones (with tiny stones and those crap white gold ones - people buy white gold to make out that they are wearing platinum buy Platinum in the first place).

Who the hell came up with this one then?

Oh yeah, women.

Mind you, you'll spend the rest of your life paying for her, so might as well start as you're going to go on.
