second starter question
Discussion
ok - so i fitted a new starter discovered it was a dud and then got one that worked - thanks Tim for help with the diagnosis- but half the time rather turning the engine over it tries to engage with the fly wheel but does not seem to make it and makes a horrendous knocking/grating noise as the two wheels meet and the starter spins.
i have tried to adjust as far as i can the position of the starter with no success - any bright ideas

If you rock the cerb in gear to move the position of the flywheel, does it then start?
Did you check the condition of the flywheel ring gear whilst the starter was out...quite often we tend to find the teeth have worn at the ends where the starter has crashed into the gear time and time again, this then prevents the starter from engaging first time.

I have seen worn ring gear but it's not that which is causing the problem. The problem is the one-way clutch in the starter which is a series of roller bearings which travel up a ramp to drive the pinion .. when they don't lock the pinion to the motor shaft properly thats when you get the screech. I use a start company who use a 7 roller freewheel and ive not had a bad starter off them yet. they aren't cheap but they seem to be good value for money so far because they work
