Good drive over the Moors before Trackrod Rally?

I'm trying to persuade my mate to come out for an early morning run, finishing at the Cropton stage around 9:30.

This is my idea for a route from Leeds/Wakefield so far.

Does anyone with more local knowledge fancy suggesting any improvements? PM me if it's a secret I'm looking for roads suited to a Cooper S and my Smart Roadster - so ideally decent surfacing and twisty enough so that we're topping out at 60-70. Say 3 hours max from the A1/A64 junction.

keep on A64 til the Elvington turnoff -
Elvington B1228
Sutton upon Derwent - Pocklington
Pocklington thru N Dalton - B1246
B1248 to Wetwang and onto Malton
Malton to Oswardkirk B1257

If staying on the M62 to Goole is an option you can come into Sutton on Derwent from below via Howden and the B1228

Cheers for that. So the route looks like this? What're those roads like then - some of them look race-track fast on a map. I'll get dropped like a hot brick if they are, and have to just meet him there

driven those roads a few times last year, its a route we used on the yorkshire moors meet last year. Ground Clearance will be an issue on low cars between helmsley and kirkbymoorside. K'moorside-destination is VVVVV.Quick!

Mark - your thread had arrived I was hoping you'd pop in.

I've driven the Bakey Ridge/Rosedale legs before and they are fantastic. Suited my Imprezas better than the Smart TBH, the Smart is too slow and skittish to be ideal but it'll still be fun. What's the Cockayne leg like then? Lots of crests and dips? Neither car is low.

Any thoughts on Sparky's route suggestion? That's a new area to me.

Totally depends on the pace at which you wish to hit it. the Cockayne loop has been used as a tarmac rally stage before now... We had some very low cars on it last time and they were fine, couple of slight grounding points but only on the v.low cars, the 996's Turbo's and me were totally fine. Best thing is you get next to no traffic on there at any time of the day. The Cockanye loop is VERY scenic and i can highly reccomend it, if only to cruise along and put yourself in a good mood with the world. To be honest its a mixed bag because there are twistys and switchbacks to throw the car hard into with no danger as well as the odd straight to open the taps on-on the other hand there are areas where if you drove along them at anything over 40 you'd be getting air! Fantastic drivers road if you take a relaxed "lets have some fun" attitude as opposed to "drive it like you stole it" attitude...(thats what the Kirkbymoorside half is for!!! ) Very busy at the min (last days at work)...will look at sparkys route tonight on my laptop and comment on it for ya then.

Yeh thats it

The Wetwang Malton section is can be fast in parts. you do have to be a bit more careful on the other sections are there are quite a few almost right angle bends so if you don't know the roads it can take the edge of the outright speed to be on the safe side. - the sutton - wetwang is the highlight.
