Electric Ruf On The Way?

Ruf rumoured to be working on electric Porsche Cayman to take on Tesla

Battery only for the Cayman?
Battery only for the Cayman?
Everyone is going for a slice of the eco pie these days but one manufacturer we thought would distance itself from environmental friendliness is Ruf, creator of mega-fast supercars. But even Alios Ruf has given in and is taking time out from making outrageously powerful Posrche-based cars to make an electric Porsche-based car.

The German tuner is reportedly working on an all-electric Cayman that would complete with the Tesla Roadster. It is expected to have a little less overall power than the Tesla (150kW compared to 185kW) but will have considerably more twisting force (650Nm versus 375Nm).

A lithium-ion battery pack of undisclosed output will provide power to the motor and the car has a projected top speed of 125mph. Rumour has it the Ruf could have multiple gears instead of just one and it could demand a higher price tag than the $100,000 asking price for a Tesla.

To be honest, the real challenge these days is not making 600bhp, but making a decent alternative to the internal combustion engine.

So any company that can do that, will make more headlines than a company who comes out shouting about a slightly hotted-up 911 or kit-car monstrosity.

Multiple Gears! Would that be a manual or an auto then? With an IC engine, you know when to change gear by listening to the engine-note. How long will it take to learn the equivalent motor-note for an electric motor?

No reason you'd need you... you could have a rev counter with a red and green zone just as easy. Or a shift light if it was really that difficult.

this is great news, i imagine that it would be very fast at ecceleratig too, like the tesla. If they do release this then i hope it will be a big success and maybe more companies will start to introduce this technology. the more that do it the cheaper it will come (hopefully). Im just a little surprised that the tesla has not had much coverage to the public as if you ask around not many people have heard of it, and the electric vehicle name is tarnished ny the g-wiz and similar vehicles.

So where will all this electricity come from?? Oh yer that coal or nucular power station which is not "ECO FRIENDLY". So the same pollution for a car that cant go as fast the IC engine.

..considerably more twisting force
Why can't it just be called torque? Next thing we'll be refering to an engines power as pushing force!

Why is this bad? Electric powered cars are infinitely faster than internal combustion powered ones being as maximum torque is at 0rpm. Surely going faster is good?

While I appreciate the new technology there is nothing like a rumbling V8 with straight through pipes that pops and bangs. Electric cars have their advantages but they can never replace the sound of a petrol engine.

infinitely faster eh, are you sure?

personally I would rather see Hydrogen technology developed further than electric, they are still damaging to the environment just look at the environmental cost of Prius.

Apologies for the vagueness of this reply but didnt that other electric car that looked a bit like an SLR have the option to produce fake engine note!?

You could choose what engine you imagined you were driving v6/v8 etc. hahaha

Electric and hybrid cars are an environmental white elephant, sure they save you money at the pumps (which is a good thing) but green they are not, lithium ion batteries are nasty things, and their production "carbon footprint" is huge. I don't know about the nano-titanate cells in the British Lightning GT though, they may be better.

To be honest I don’t care what the power plant in my car is, just so long as it delivers the performance and handling I desire, more developments into electric is a good thing as it helps bring the cost of them down.

BORING! We all know that electricity can be generated cleanly, so shut up with that tiresome argument please.

Can't we have bhp and lb-ft like we do for normal engines?
I've been doing Maths all day and can't be bothered during my lunch break!

"Infinitely faster than petrol" - no

"Potential to be infinitely faster than they are now" - yes

Electric and hydrogen technology is complimentary to each other, as fuel cells are just a means of storage for the potential energy... but you still need an electric car platform to make either a battery car or fuel cell car work.

Look beyond carbon footprints - once demand is there for the hardware, the technology for recycling and producing batteries will come. At a local level, zero pollution from vehicles in the street is a massive step forward.

Why is this bad? I take it you have never heard a flat six with straight pipes through an alpine tunnel? wink

Speed and acceleration only make up a small part of a proper driving experience.

Oh I quite agree smile it is just the media etc that seem to focus on the carbon footprint of cars, rather than local air quality etc. The next few years ae going to see huge leaps in electric and hybrid car technology.

These 2 speed gearboxes are cool, remind me of 80's arcade racers with the High & Low settings.

Just want a 2 speed Testarossa now for some live action Out Run!
