I/we decides I wanted a vasectomy so booked an appointment at the local Doc’s. My appointment is with a Dr Unbungo Umbungo. This guy look’s like he just got off the boat from Africa. I tell him I want a vasectomy and he say’s ‘ you want to do vasectomy?’

I said ‘ mate, if you lend me the tools I’ll give it a go, but I’d rather a doctor does it’

tumbleweed

So he franticly starts typing on his keyboard after about 2 minuets he phones reception and asks how to spell it? Why didn’t he ask me?

Anyway I now have a referral to a Dr Patel.

Am I racist to be uncomfortable with this?? Muslims and jews see muslim and jewish doctors. A black mate of mine’s Mrs asks to see a black doctor!

Can I ask for a white doctor? After all they’re my bks.

Mods, This is not meant to offend and the names have been changed.

I don't think it makes you racist to want to be referred to a professional that has a better-than-wet-fish grasp on the English language.

I wouldn't care if the doctor was black, white, pink, blue or orange.

However if he had such a poor grasp of English that he had to phone the secretary to find out how to spell vasectomy there is no way I'd allow that person to either carry out or arrange surgery of that kind.

Chances are you'll wake up and find you have to change your login name to AussieSheila.

Not totally the same but I went to the doctors to get some holiday jabs done and the doctor looked up what I needed on google. I suppose the information is there but my jaw did drop when I saw him doing it.

EDIT: And if you need to ask then you probably are, in all circumstances.

I went into a private hospital yesterday to have my carpal tunnel op done. Sitting in a private room, an Indian guy walks in, doesn't introduce himself, and asks me in finest Bengali accent: "are you having something to eat today?",

Now I'm familiar with this type of conversation, as I lived in Asia for a while, so what he meant was "Have you HAD something to eat today?" I had to ask though, just to make sure we were on the same page.

This guy is the chief anaesthetist in the hospital, but we only know that because my wife recognised him from when she worked there.

Would you feel comfortable being 'sent under' by a guy who has a somewhat loose command of the English language/communications?

I don't think it matters that you want to see a Doc with a better grasp of English as that's perfectly reasonable if it's the person that'll be waving a very sharp knife around your 'nads. I don't think it matters if they are white, black or just a little bit tanned, the important thing for me would be feeling comfortable with them.
Calling him Dr Unbungo Umbungo is quite possibly racist though.

To be fair I wouldn't want advise from someone I wasn't sure actually knew what I was telling them.

Regardless of his race if he has to ask how to spell something he must deal with almost every day.....well I'd be wanting someone else to handle my question.

WHy did your jaw drop?
Do you honestly expect a doctor to remember every single combination of vaccines for every single country?
Confused as to your point.

Why not.

I ask to see a male Dr, as I have had issues with a previous Women Dr miss-diagnosing.

Then again if you live in Bradford you probably don't have much choice...

You do realise that you can 'think' in foreign languages don't you?
Genuinely, and I believe science proves this, someone who does not speak English is often quite capable of advanced human activities.

rolleyesRight up until he has to communicate with the other staff. Thinking and communicating with a team are 2 different things.

Surgeon: "Is he ok there?"
Gas man: thinks"no he's in the st", says "yes he's fine".

Ok it's a silly example but you get the idea...
