Why is it that sometimes the view is too wide and the horizontal scroll bar is required?
I previously thought it was because of large pictures but the above thread has no pictures.

By the way Im viewing in 1152 X 864.

That link looks fine to me and I'm on 800x600, I do get the horizontal srollbar when someone puts a huge row of smilies in or a huge web address (usually multimap).

OK on 1024x768 too.

Stretching only happens with wide pictures, or long lines of text without spaces. Try using different screen resolutions.

The horizontal scrollbar appears if the text can't word wrap, i.e. no spaces.

For example, this should break it :
textwithoutspacesfollowedbytextwithoutspacesfollowedbytextwithoutspacesfollowedbytextwithoutspacesfollowedbytextwithoutspacesfollowedbytextwithoutspacesfollowedbytextwithoutspacesfollowedbytextwithoutspacesfollowedbytextwithoutspacesfollowedbytextwithoutspacesfollowedbytextwithoutspacesfollowedby

aha, so it does BUT...

The original link I posted has none of what you mentioned.

I have also just noticed that when viewing at work that link thread doesnt have the horizontal scroll bar but at home it does!

its not really that important but i guess there must be a setting within IE that I need to change.

Using IE 5 on Win "K at work and IE6 on XP at home.

Like I said, not really important now anyway.

does this one work then? trying to create a line with spaces, that does not break at all. Needs to be significantly wider than Size Nine Elm's example, to see if it really doesn't break; which I could not if it would be within the existing page width, and hence would not break then not reaching the right border of the table. That was a really long sentence

now look boys, this is just taking the p*ss, we don't need to have a competition to see who can get the longest sentence to stretch the screen to its absolute limits, my monitor is having heart failure over this thread, why not just post a slightly wider than normal picture, wouldn;t that be easier, i think so, keep doing things like this and it'll take 10 minutes to read the thread from side to side never mind page to page, maybe instead of just using the space bar we could use the return key occasionally or maybe stick in a smiley or to, i can see ted closing this thread if this keeps up, and breath, and we don't want to annoy the big 'yin do we

I find it rather irritating when you have to keep scrolling forwards and back

....but then, I usually kill it.
